Alright oil masters, a friend has a 5.7 Hemi 2016 and came from an 04 Hemi, he ran PYB 10-30 in it. He says he is not going to run 5W-20 in his new truck because “that oil is for a car”. He refuses to get Redline or Amsoil, so I just stopped on that front. I’m trying to convince him to go PUP 5W-30 4qts and 0W-40 3 qts or at least 5 of 5-30 and 2 of 0-40(since he can get the 5qt jugs of 5-30).

He refuses to believe 0W-40 is good oil at anything, I searched through the thread for something to show him how it’s kind of a super oil, but I didn’t find it or maybe I missed it. Could you guys pass on any info you have to help? Also, anyone who has run this combo, what were your experiences/results?

First off he's got the right idea, no 5/20. After that all you can do is suggest that he should run this or that. I'd say best plan of attack would be to push "Ram Forum" and say read this, there's tons of info on oils and user experiances. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink..

Yeah you are right, just want to try and help him avoid a can/lifter fail later on.

Maybe he will run 10W-30 PYB , nothing wrong with that so long as he's not in an extremely cold winter state . Is he in Texas or New Mexico near you ?

3-4 k oci with PYB though .

He asked if there was anything we could add to the current fill from the dealer to not “waste” this oil change. I was thinking Redline ZDDP? It’s a Certified Pre-owned with just over 36k, he has an extended powertrain warranty to 100,000.

I'm not a fan of oil additives ...I'd just dump the dealers oil and start off fresh with a quality filter and a known good oil in a 30 wt .
Nothing wrong with PYB , if hes partial to Pennzoil then I wound go with PUP mainly for an extended oci to 6-7k & the Molybdenum , with PYB did stick to 3-4 k oci .
If he has or developes a tick or just loud hemi then go with pup 0W-40 PUP for the higher Molybdenum ppm use it straight or mix with up to 3qts of PUP 30wt if concerned with the 40wt , or just go with Redline 5W-30 with a RP10-48 or Amsoil filter and call it a day [emoji16]

I'm hoping maybe I can get some clarification, I've read through numerous pages and haven't quite found the answer I'm looking for. My truck currently has 118k miles. Has no warranty, so that is out of the picture. I've ran 5W20 Mobil 1 Fully synthetic since about 10k miles. My truck has a very faint cold tick at startup, and subsides once it has heated up. On hot idle there is also a small faint tick but I feel that is just how these are. Nothing concerning. But I've just been reading up on that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum has more moly than what Mobil 1 can provide. My question is, what would benefit using 5W30 compared to 5W20? I'm in southern Texas so there is never a time where it is below freezing. The truck is warmed up in about 2 minutes of being on so I feel the 30w would be thinned down rather quickly. Reason I mention 30 weight is because I can really only find a couple websites that sells 5W20 PUP Walmart being one but it is showing that it is not being sold anymore. Compared to 5W30 can be found anywhere, as well as walmart, autozone, ect. Would just like some input if anyone had any similar questions. I also do tune my truck to remove the MDS system. Thanks!

In a nutshell the 30wt over the 20wt oil benefits in a higher film strength and in manys opinions also offers up a better viscosity for a 395 hp V-8 engine .
PUP is a fantastic oil Sir and if I were you living in Texas I'd go with the 0W-40 PUP as it has much more Molybdenum than the 30wt .

If your not stuck on using PUP then absolutely go with Redline 5W-30 and a high quality 100% SYNTHETIC filer such as the RP 10-48 .

Welcome to the forum from Bristol, Tn. and welcome to the thread !

I appreciate that. Yeah, I'm not dead set on using one specific oil. It's just one that I've read good reviews on. Same with Redline. From what I'm gathering Redline seems to be better than Amsoil. As far as the 0W-40. Are you saying straight 7 qts of that or mix? I'm not sure how comfortable I would feel about going to that weight. I would definitely need to read up on that. But I do see Redline 5W-30 is a great oil. I'm looking on the walmart website and I am seeing two for the Redline. I see an "All Synthetic" and a "Full Synthetic" Assuming the all is more like a conventional oil? If you by chance have a link to the specific full synthetic oil that I would need would be great!

Go to redlines website, that will give you all the info. You can also order from that website or nick@gotexhaust who is a forum sponsor.

The 5w30 PUP doesn't have more moly then the 5w20, but the 0w40 has 4-5 times more. Also 0w40 PUP spends most of the time in the engine thinner then Redline 5w30. The reason why manu's use 0w40 to make these super oils is because they are not hamstrung by API rules that force low additives on 20 and 30 weights. So oil manu's went to 0w40 in some applications knowing because of the swing winter rating to weight, it will shear down to 30 weight in no time due to the heavy use of vii's. But because of the weight the vii's are mush less of a burden to the lubrication. Try 5w30 PUP if that is what you are comfortable with, but just passing on the info. Maybe the 5w30 will work, if not listen to some of the guys who solved their ticks.

I appreciate that. The cost difference between the 0W40 PUP with the RP filter and Redline 5W30 was nearly a $50 difference. For cost sakes, I think the 0W-40 PUP would be the route to go until I could afford to pay that difference.

Sorry to be an ass... but...

**** man..... the oil has been in the crank case for who knows how long. Tell him to hike up his skirt, pull his wallet out of his purse and pay for some fresh oil.

Yes Sir , I was meaning 7ea qts of the PUP 0W-40 .
As Burla perfectly described above the 40wt PUP shears quickly to a 30wt viscosity oil due to the viscosity index improvers (vii) actually the 40wt PUP is a thin 40 wt to begin with so no worries there .[emoji1303]
If you still have a tic after approximately 1,000 miles with the PUP then I'd highly recommend going with Redline 5W-30 !

Redline has proven itself many times within these walls and other forums to be the hemi tic killer , but you do need to give it time for the Molybdenum to plate .

If I remember correctly 0W-40 PUP has about 220 ppm of Molybdenum , Redline has about 500 ppm .

I'm certainly not saying amsoil is a bad oil , think it's a great oil , but imho both PUP & especially Redline are much better suited for the 5.7L Hemi .

Here is some photos of the Redline oil that I'm speaking of .
And I'd definitely purchase from Nick there on the forum ( best price I've found ) [email protected]
You can find him in the vendor section on the forum , just send him a Private Message and he will respond quickly and hook you up with the best prices around [emoji1303]

Hope this helps !
