I worked for Subaru Canada for many years, and helped my ex purchase her Forrester and then Outback (after she totaled the Forester with my daughter and her dog in it... thankfully all were okay!).
I can attest that they are Fantastic vehicles, and their AWD systems are second to none, especially in the snow with great snow tires in use!
Now, they do have their issues, as any OEM does. However, from firsthand experience, this is the recipe for a great Subaru purchase (in my opinion):
- Lowest mileage possible on the newest model you can source (under 100,000KM's is always best)
- Look for one that has service records with it
- Look for one that has had its annual rust proofing (a good crawl under the vehicle can determine its condition)
- Purchase from the dealership so you have their quality guarantee and assurances it's been well looked over
- Take it for a vigorous test drive
Some points to note:
- Use premium fuel; they really do run much better on it!!
- It is imperative that you change the spark plugs sooner than later (they are a ****** to do, but you're a car guy so it's a non-issue

)
- Oil changes are super important to be done on regular intervals, like no more than 6,000KM's (like our trucks, quality synthetic oil and a quality oil filter)
- Ensure the rear brakes are serviced annually (fronts, too) as they are known to seize calipers quicker back there from lack of maintenance
- Basically, just do a MAJOR service on it once you purchase it used (trans fluid change - use OEM trans fluid though), front & rear diffs, coolant, PCV valve, new air filter (cabin air filter, too), TB clean, brake fluid flush & fill, front & rear brake service and parking brake service (they have electronic parking brakes, so it's important to use them lots and to service them, too), etc.
Their transmissions are super reliable and nice to drive. Again, lowest mileage on the newest model you can source. Regular servicing records, and do that major service upon purchase.
The Forester is a sweet ride and highly recommended.
