HELP.... So off Lexus 350, on paper great vehicle, but test drive it POS. 10% reported to have early gear transmission issues and the one I drove had it, horrible! Worst part they cannot be fixed.

Back to drawing board I need my ramily, I forgot what you guys said about subaru outback or Forester. I did test drive one today, drove like a dream, very nice driving vehicle. If you get a base model it doesn't have auto stop which yeah duh sign me up for that. I'm kinda crushing the Forester to be honest, mind you it ain't my car, but what are you thoughts? neither are di, but they do have cvt, cant get the wife off what she likes she doesn't consider minor stuff like transmission, lol. Feeling pretty proud at this point, got her off a new 350 and now got her off a used 350, somehow she because semi reasonable in this process so I wanna get her into something before everything is di. In her brain outback is more luxury then rav 4, whatever, ain't gonna go to the Matt's on that one but I think she is making a mistake.

Listen - i was just happy to get mine off an Audi A6 into a Mazda.
I forced her into a bunch of cars at the annual auto show, test drove the top 3, bought the most preferred, even with turbo GDI.
At least it ain't a PHEV with the worst of both worlds subject to lifelong failures of beaucoup $$ custom parts.

Buy it. Forget about it. We'll all die off soon enough.

I was think about you because the salesman had a mazda cx5 and said it was the best vehicle otherwise he would be driving an outback, his top two. I cant even get the wife to sit the Mazda, she knows their relationship to Ford and that is a killer for her. If Subaru has a cousin like Ford, don't even tell me, lol.

My in laws have a 2018 Forester, from what I've seen of it its a pretty solid vehicle. They only have like 15k on it so I don't have any long term reliability on it but they did have to have the condenser replaced under warranty because it spontaneously sprung a leak but other than that its been really good to them.

Subarus overall seem to be pretty decent if you don't go DI or turbo. The CVTs are obviously a weak link but the head gasket failures are supposedly way less now. Still something to keep in mind.

So what are the other contenders at this point? Thers a newer Rav or a CRV and I think both have some form of DI and/or turbo. I would RUN from any smaller GM suv. Same with Ford or Jeep...

Cant remeber if we talked about this but what about a used 4 runner? Pre 2025 they had the bulletproof 4.0 and trans...

appreciate the response Corey, mind you today I thought the only option was the 350 per the wife, so I don't know what the range is. If I end up with the Subaru either one, I'd be semi happy with that. I like that info you gave me, maybe we should consider a extended warranty as without what you said about the gasket I wouldn't think about that, so thanks there. I got her off a 65k new car, and got her off paying 35k for a used car, and now got her to not only accept it but she likes it the idea of a new 30k dollar car. Today was worth it, I put in the work let her make the decisions so we are heading in that direction. Any smaller SUV with a good name.

Funny as hell, end of day we went to a Nissan dealer they had a 350 she wanted to drive. It was wrecked, crazy they wanted 34k for a damaged vehicle, whatever. I test drove a pathfinder. Early opinions I really like this for me. A real nice car but I haven't done research on it. Too big for the wife, but nice engine and traditional transmission nice looking vehicle with tow package for the trailer. I wasn't thinking new car for me, but it is somewhere on the table still considering. BTW, I simply cannot get her to sit a rogue, man Corey they were sweet. It's just the name for her, freak'n women. If it were me, I'd go rogue before the outback/Forester, but both would be in my top 5 for SUV. I'm gonna try and at least get her to sit the rav 4, but she told me 5 times she doesn't want another one, so I should keep my gains and not digress into her rebeling on me. Another option would be used Mercedes, gotta research gl5 or something like that, gl something.

she said bmw on the table but obviously not for me, di and bad trans, nope.

pretty cool man= good find, if you break the air damn they send you one on the house, that was my only worry. Don't tell the EPA about this one, I bet this will get .000001 less mileage.

I worked for Subaru Canada for many years, and helped my ex purchase her Forrester and then Outback (after she totaled the Forester with my daughter and her dog in it... thankfully all were okay!).

I can attest that they are Fantastic vehicles, and their AWD systems are second to none, especially in the snow with great snow tires in use!

Now, they do have their issues, as any OEM does. However, from firsthand experience, this is the recipe for a great Subaru purchase (in my opinion):
- Lowest mileage possible on the newest model you can source (under 100,000KM's is always best)
- Look for one that has service records with it
- Look for one that has had its annual rust proofing (a good crawl under the vehicle can determine its condition)
- Purchase from the dealership so you have their quality guarantee and assurances it's been well looked over
- Take it for a vigorous test drive

Some points to note:
- Use premium fuel; they really do run much better on it!!
- It is imperative that you change the spark plugs sooner than later (they are a ****** to do, but you're a car guy so it's a non-issue ;))
- Oil changes are super important to be done on regular intervals, like no more than 6,000KM's (like our trucks, quality synthetic oil and a quality oil filter)
- Ensure the rear brakes are serviced annually (fronts, too) as they are known to seize calipers quicker back there from lack of maintenance
- Basically, just do a MAJOR service on it once you purchase it used (trans fluid change - use OEM trans fluid though), front & rear diffs, coolant, PCV valve, new air filter (cabin air filter, too), TB clean, brake fluid flush & fill, front & rear brake service and parking brake service (they have electronic parking brakes, so it's important to use them lots and to service them, too), etc.

Their transmissions are super reliable and nice to drive. Again, lowest mileage on the newest model you can source. Regular servicing records, and do that major service upon purchase.

The Forester is a sweet ride and highly recommended.

Big trouble @ Phillips-Conoco, or whatever the conglomerate is called these days. They're such a kluge of bought up companies, including Red Line, that they aren't operating well. Vulture Capitalist owners are not amused - who knows what will happen, but I've seen anti-Rollerball activities at other conglomerates realizing that putting a bunch of companies under an umbrella shell holding corporation subtracts value from all -

"Phillips today trades at a substantial discount to a sum-of-its-parts valuation, and investors have plainly lost confidence in the Company's ability to unlock this value under its current structure. As detailed in our "Streamline66" presentation, we believe Phillips can resolve these issues through decisive action. Another year of empty rhetoric and broken promises is unacceptable."

mucho appreciatta

We are going with a new one. Funny story, we were looking at used and drove a used outback and loved it at 28k. Well, why bother used when new can be had 2-3 grand more. One of the better vehicles at holding it's value. The difference between the Lexus 350 and outback was like night and day driving experience with field of view included. Now the Forester is even better with field of view. Gotta get something before everything goes di.

The Allision 1000 does run hot. I had an '04. The GM 10L1000 10 speed faux Allison does not.

In contrast, the Aisin AS69RC Ram has run behind the Cummins runs cool as a cucumber, even when towing heavy. I pulled our old toy hauler up long, steep grades with the cruise set to 65, in the dead of Summer, well over 100'F, and never saw over 182'F.
