Blackstone says insoluble = oxidation, but other labs have a quantity.

Well, y'all been wasting your time studying VOAs and UOAs. Here's the real test of engine oils...

It's all settled now.

Flashbacks of Slick 50 and their friction rig, Schaeffer's with their egg beaters.

Step right up, dupes - er, I mean folks!

Picked up a case of Redline 5W30 this week. Going to switch from PUP 0W40 with 20oz of Lubegard to this next change.

I think the PUP 0W40 was $16 ish CAD a quart last time I bought some plus the 2 10oz bottles of Lubegard that were about $30.00 CAD so moving up to Redline at $19.42 CAD a quart actually was cheaper. $142 vs $136. Look at me saving some money. :D

JB’s shipped it to my door for free so I didn’t have to drive across the city to get it.

I haven’t seen too many RP filters around but I haven’t really looked. Fram Ultra XG2’s are easy to find at Canadian Tire and I buy a couple at a time when I see them on sale.

Not sure where to put my baseline Blackstone report. Drove 7500 miles on a first run of Red Line 5W-20. Attached is the report. Not sure why the calcium is so high or if it matters. This is my first oil analysis.

Your calcium looks normal for Redline, it's used to neutralize acids. Very common to see high amounts of either calcium of magnesium in engine oil.

Your copper levels are really nice for Redline in a hemi, my copper is hovering around 50.

We usually put our reports here:

Add tbn if you want to take advantage of what that calcium does for you, gives you a longer interval. It is rare the first report looks that good, looks like your truck is a winner, like ramfinni said. Find a good filter and double that interval and get tbn and see where you are at. It's like tossing out 100 bucks using redline on a half interval. You are out of warranty? That 5w30 formula adds that butter smoothness, not that you need it with a truck running that good. But in phoenix I'd rock 5w30.

Did a google search, is that for Diesel engines? Is that the same additive?

TBN is a test you pay 10 bucks for at blackstone, it sets your oil change interval. CA is a level, but tbn tests active calcium, which allows the lab to tell you the safe interval. CA is constantly denaturing in the combustion process, at some point it may read high but it isnt doing it's job at neutralizing acid. You need an "active" CA reading = tbn.

Here is the UOA of my transfer case running Amsoil 75w90 GL-5, according to Blackstone it looks good.
One thing to consider is Blackstone doesn't test for Brass; Brass is an Alloy (Man Made Metal) comprised of Copper and Zinc. Zinc being a EP additive added to engine oils it would be hard to make a determination of synchronizer damage. However, Copper is low/average according to Blackstone so that is a good sign.
In all fairness this was a short run of 22k miles, not sure what long term usage of a GL-5 fluid in the TC would look like.
