You also have to watch out for counterfeit Redline. I got some questionable gallons off of Amazon a few years back. The labels were half in French and the viscosity listed in the French part was 0w20 when the rest of the label said 5w30.

I opened both immediately and both jugs had the sweet Redline smell. They turned out to be genuine Redline because my truck stayed quiet but it really got me thinking about how easy it would be to counterfeit Redline...
can trick the nose, smells like brandy, lol. Plus it is a little red.

Something else to try, both Jegs and Summit have beat a price, show them any current price on a product and they will hit that. So if you find Redline at a great price, both Jegs and Summit are reputable companies to buy from.

So, your saying that Jegs and Summit offer a price matching guarantee?

I did it on an order last year from Summit, send them an email and proof and they change the price on the product for you! Order can just be placed true email, so you will have to list everything in an email instead of the normal way. I saved $150 that way instead of order from several places + the extra shipping costs to Sweden from several places.

Went to Canadian Tire last Saturday as they had the 5 liter jugs of PUP 5W30 on Sale for $42.99 CAD (Normally $57.99 CAD) but of course they had none on the shelf because everyone bought it up.

Noticed that Amazon Canada had it (and still does) for the same price so I bought two 5L Jugs. For anyone in Canada looking for it.

I use it in both our Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Cherokee.

Now I think you may have been able to go to the courtesy counter and get a raincheck if they had none on the shelf??

I stock up when it goes on sale too but it seems to go on sale less often than it used to and the last two times it was bought out before I got there.
I buy it at my local Crappy Tire in Airdrie, and they're never out, lol.I bought 2 jugs last week. Cochrane has the best Crappy Tire that i've found, they even beat the Deerfoot Crappy Tire for having stock, and i'd rather drive over to Cochrane from Airdrie then drive into Calgary, lol. Most Crappy Tires will still price match Wally Worlds prices,so if it's not on sale at Crappy Tire when you need it,check and see if it's on sale at Wally World, and then take the add to your local Crappy Tire,or buy it at Wally World

Here's today's pour out from my catch can whilst getting my oil & filter changed.
Oil & filter had 10,200Km's on it.
HPL SC 0W30 and RP 20-820 in/on my engine for this last OCI.

Was run all winter long, including extremely cold conditions whilst up North. Plus all the cold starts and warm ups before driving.

This is from a brand new 23' Warlock (bought in late Feb 24') with a very healthy and strong engine that has only ever received 91+ fuel at every fill and either HPL SC 0W30 or RL HP 5W30 since the factory oil was drained at about 2,500Km's.

Stevie Wonder can see that oil catch cans work ;)

(posted in the oil catch can thread, too)

Sample gets sent out tomorrow to Blackstone, with TAN & TBN testing as well.
Stay tuned for the results!

So some more hokey pokey...

Toyota cross 169 HP mpg 31/33 weight 3115 base 2.0 liter cvt transmission

Toyota Rav 4 203 HP mpg 27/35 weight 3370 pounds 2.5 liter 8 speed

You have to be pulling my leg right through my balls. Last week I proved di turbo;s get less mileage despite being lighter, and now you see the heavier rav 4 gets a full 2 mpg's better then the lighter CVT 2.0 liter. I imagine actual mileage ever stronger my point, the cross in a wind storm is a scary thought.

I mean common now, there is no way a cvt can get better mileage with those numbers. They are pure and simple, dirty, dankity, dusty liars. Fellas all the garbage the put in these cars and IN FACT they get much worse mileage when it counts on the hwy and up to 15 TIMES the particulates. I hope Lee zedlin scorches the earth and lets go back on the clock. All of toyotas historically great vehicles such a as the land cruiser, are now 4 bangers di turbo. Oddly it is the entry level suv's with these 4 bangers no turbo that will last the next Jurassic period.

To my oil buddies and those who cant wait til I move on from the SUV talk, the verdict is in and to my pleasant surprise the wife chose the toyota cross.

Pros
Number one and deal breaker is I am 6'4 well over 250 and it is easy in easy out for me and comfortable driving. This is not the case in so many vehicles, tbh I was very surprised by this.
Simple interior is a plus and minus, I like the simple but they can do better imo.
Handling is hands down better then rav 4, I was sure we were buying a Subaru or rav 4 start of day, test drove cross and rav 4, the cross drives better all the way around, especially up a steep hill and stop and go.
NON DI Turbo, but is direct injection
Only 24k new, common now sweet. Holds value big time.

Cons- MPG's less then rav 4
Under Powered
No awd standard like the subaru's
Simple interior
cvt longevity and mpg

Mind you my "issue" with CVT is longevity and lies about mpg's, I actually like the function especially in low rpm's. I live up a steep hill, we test drove the rav 4 up the hill it was gear hunting and spinning, crazy. The cross I stopped many times and started, just butter smooth up steep grade. The largest difference the modern rav 4 ain't your daddy's rav 4, it is wider and clunky, I was very surprised how poor it drove. Mind you I still believe that trans/engine combo is a winner in general, but we parked the rav 4 next to our rav 4 and you can see it is wider. The facts are only an inch wider, but the drive is very very different. Very clunky like a Tacoma, now we are truck guys we are used to it, but I kid you not my ram is smoother driving then the new rav 4.

Now, if it were me and I was in this sub compact SUV market for me, I would have likely went with Hyundai Kona, similar engine, 8 speed trans, and a 10 year warranty for the same exact price. But as @Hemi395 and @U&A can attest, when dealing with women they will have different criteria then you, and all you can hope for is an ok Decision, maybe not the best choice for you, and I think I accomplished that. The wife has a small list and toyota is on it and hyundai isnt is on it, nothing American is on it sad to say, but of note the cross is made in usa. Corey in general Toyota cvt's are good?

Hope this helps someone in the sub compact SUV market.

Fellas I have to pass this along, in my 58 years I never tried bacon jerky until today. I am a big beef jerky guy, and I don't prefer under cooked bacon. However, the smoking process on this is amazing. The jerky gets fully cooked but keeps that tender texture, it explodes smokey and fresh bacon flavor. I needed 3 bucks to get free shipping from Amazon, so I said what the heck, give it a shot. Sad to say I will probably be hooked on this for a while, so unless you mind a new habit, don't buy this stuff. It is really good, very impressed.

Awesome Mike! I saw one of those the other day and they look pretty nice.

Do you know if that has Toyotas CVT that has a 1st gear? Even if not, their CVTs definitely don't have the bad reputation like the Nisson/Jatco ones do.

But above all else, make sure you change the fluid often. Like sub 20k intervals. CVT fluid is quite unique and it really takes a beating under normal use. It has to lubricate everything that needs lubricating, but still have the frictional capabilities to keep the metal belt from slipping on the pullies. It gets spent pretty quickly.

For example, in 2023 my mother wanted a Rogue and I found a 2019 with 14k on the clock. Still had the factory powertrain warranty and still smelled brand new inside. It was essentially a new vehicle. I decided to change the CVT fluid and it was BLACK. Like used motor oil black at 14k. I went back with the overpriced Nissan unicorn tear fluid just because it was under powertrain warranty at the time and it has since stayed a nice clear color. So I would say you will want to do the initial trans service no later than 10k. I would also go back with Toyota CVT fluid so they can't say you used the "wrong fluid" if anything happens.

BUT once you're out of warranty you will want to go with Amsoil CVT fluid, the stuff is simply amazing. And its way cheaper than the oem fluid.

Yeah, the cvt is weird, it has shift points. My guess it has to be just a software thing? Especially first gear, the rpm's will come down just like with gears, apparently it is a "ten" speed cvt transmission, whatever that means.

I was going to try d6, but maybe I have to get my amsoil membership and get some cvt fluid. Yeah, I change the rav 4 trans fluid yearly just to keep fresh, I will be doing the same on the cross. Have to look into the process. I don't have any idea on if cvt requires a special additive pack, so I will research that for sure. Amsoil cvt sounds great, thanks heads up

Toyota's "Direct Shift-CVT" features a simulated 10-speed transmission with a physical "launch gear" for initial acceleration and a continuously variable belt drive for smooth, efficient operation, offering a 6% fuel efficiency improvement.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Simulated 10-Speed:
While it's a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the system simulates 10 gear ratios, allowing drivers to use paddle shifters for a more traditional feel.

  • Launch Gear:
A physical first gear, also known as a "launch gear," is used for initial acceleration from a standstill, improving low-speed responsiveness and efficiency.

  • Belt Drive:
Once the vehicle is moving, the belt drive takes over, providing a smooth, continuous range of gear ratios.

  • Benefits:
    • Improved Fuel Efficiency: The system is designed to optimize engine speed for fuel economy, resulting in a claimed 6% improvement.

    • Smooth Acceleration: The continuously variable nature of the CVT allows for smooth and linear acceleration without the jolts of traditional transmissions.

    • Quieter Operation: The system can maintain steady cruising speeds at lower RPMs, leading to reduced noise levels.

    • Fewer Moving Parts: CVTs typically have fewer moving parts than traditional automatic transmissions, potentially leading to lower production and repair costs.

Yeah do NOT use anything but a CVT fluid in a CVT....
