Remember when John Deere did their "New Coke" mistake? "Sabre by Deere" quasi-tractors sold only @ the Home Despot?
Yes I do. I also remember when Snapper was a top homeowner brand, as we were a Snapper dealer for many years, and I ran the shop at that time. Cub Cadet was at one time the best yard tractor you could by, until they went to Lowes....
Huskvarna was big daddy once also, until they went to Lowes. Stihl is still good, but not near as good as before.
The downfall of all these brands was the catering to chain stores over mom and pop independent sales and on site repair shops.
The big boys were doing all they could to run mom and pop out of business, so they wanted lower power equipment prices.
Then, Whamo, same name equipment, much lesser quality.
Snapper didn't keep up with the changing times. Their attempt at a front engine rider was OK, but not great for the price they wanted. Their lower priced weed trimmers were a joke. OMC engines that Lawn Boy used on their trimmers. Rod throwers.
I refused to order any trimmers from Snapper. They had a cast rod instead of a laminated steel one like Lawn Boy. It didn't work. They all blew up.
Snapper had a higher end trimmer with a Mitsubishi engine that was great, but way over priced.
Huskvarna had the same Mitsubishi engine when they first started in weed trimmers, then soon went south on their quality also.
Today's car manus are doing the same with quality. Flashy looks and features to sell, quality be danged.
As the saying goes, make it to sell, not use.
