Well today I took the truck in for the latest two recalls. (drag link and tailgate) I thought I ONLY had 13 or 14 recalls to date. I decided to find out for sure so I asked the service tech to print out all my service records. Seems I under estimated and the total recalls are 16. BEAT THAT!

Hey guys, been reading through this forumn a few days. Anyone know what a 2500 6.4 2019 3.73 geared is getting on the highway? Seems the 6 speed is around 17. I've seen quite a markdown on 2-3 year old models and wondering if it's worth a couple Grand more to get a used 2019?

Will be towing a small boat frequently and a camper occasionally.

Also, are these engines reliable overall as I've read a lot about manifold leaks, etc?

Thank you.

Get the 8Sp without a doubt. The 6sp is a good trans and I love my truck, but it is lacking. My 1509 5.7 with 8Sp had more power it felt like in 1-2 gears. I have driven the 8Sp 6.4 and it’s a huge difference!

Sure do hate Photobucket and their stupid watermark. The 6.4 looks great without the plastic fantastic cover though!

So... bought a new 2018 6.4l 2500 4x4, have driven it 1200 miles, started it this morning, white smoke plume, oil in exhaust pipe tip, knocking sounds.

Verdict from dealer: blown head gasket. Dealer has it in the queue for repair for sometime next week.

A few details:

- drove 400 miles in one day towing 5K lb travel trailer, then parked it for two days, then started it with white smoke plume.
- Amber check engine light came on (flashed) a few minutes after white smoke, then stayed on.
- engine has never overheated.
- oil pressure is 55 lbs or so when underway.
- oil level was super-low (way below the "add" level) on the dipstick, oil was about 1 inch up on dipstick when engine cold.

Aargh, anyone else had such an early head gasket failure?

And, what's with the super-low oil level?

Thanks!

How many miles did you have before you towed?

do you mean the oil level was down because you checked it while running versus while the motor was off? Like you walked out checked the oil, started it then checked it again while it was idling?

Yeah, sorry, I realize I'm not being clear, been a stressful day :)

- Truck had 900 miles on it when I bought it (new, un-titled), I drove it about 800 miles non-towing, then I towed trailer 400 miles, odometer has 2100 miles total on it now. While towing, used tow/haul mode, no overheating, no weird noises/smells, I watched digital gauges and all was normal.

- Two days later, started truck cold, white smoke plume (ran it for about 30 seconds), turned truck off, checked oil level then and it was at "super-low". I added a quart of oil, cranked up and drove about 1 mile to Ram dealer where now she sits.

It was prolly low due to you just started it and the oil was still cold, “ Takes a while to work back down to the pan when it is cold”. Hopefully they figure it out.

Wow that really stinks! Document everything... & make sure the dealer gets it corrected right. This is not a common problem & sounds like something wasn't put together correctly at the factory. The whole 900 miles on it seems odd. Did the dealer make some runs in it or something?

Sounds like maybe something wrong from the factory. Hopefully you can get them to replace the whole engine but not likely. Keep all paperwork and document everything. Years ago I ordered a brand new 1987 Iroc Z but there were issues with the dealer so I went to a different dealer. They had one on the lot and one on the way. The one on the lot had a blown head gasket with about 2 miles on it.

In your case hard to say if it was the block, head, or gasket that was the issue. My son towed his 8000lb camper (plus another 500 or so in his truck) 1500 miles with only 6000 miles on it with no problem. He now has over 20,000 miles on it (2018 2500 6.4L)

Yeah, dealer will update me next week when they start the repair, hoping it was a simple factory glitch, I really like the truck.

Dealer loaned me a used loaded 2018 $72k Cummins 2500 for free for 10 days so I could continue my camping trip. It is a small town dealer, where my truck blew head gasket (not the dealer I purchased truck from), gotta love their customer service, they have been marvelous. Surprised that the Cummins only gets about 10.5 mpg towing, my gasser gets 9 mpg.

Surprised they loaned you anything. Around here you are out of luck.

Oh, and that 1987 Iroc? I waited for the one that was on the way. Didn't want a lemon. These were the first with the 5.7 from the Corvette (only 1000 made that year). Ironically I had trouble with mine too. It would stall once in awhile at a stop but would start right back up. Took it in several times and they kept it for a few days while one of the mechanics drove it around and it supposedly never did it. I ended up trading it 3 years later in a 3 wheel dealer and my uncle ended up with it. He took it in for the same problem and they again couldn't find anything wrong. He went to pick it up and it stalled again about 1/4 mile after he pulled out of the lot. He turned around and traded it in on the spot for a new truck...lol

I'm not new here but do have a new truck :). I tend to stay away from forums because it leads to expensive mods and purchases..hehehe

Well, I'm back because I'm getting the itch to either level or lift my 2018 Mega Cab. Let the research begin.

Happy New Year!

So I went to the local dodge dealer to get oil and filter for my 2018 ram 2500hd 6.4 hemi. I've been using Mobil 1 full synthetic 0w40. .. with all the talk about lifter problems, I figure to see what there selling at the dealer. The parts guy sells my some pennzoil 0w40 synthetic... I said so this is better than Mobil 1?? He says no! So my question is do I keep using Mobil 1? Dont have any problems or noises. 18.000 miles. Thanks

PUP0w40 is what he has. It has more moly than M1 0w40.

The M1 has a slightly higher viscosity but not by much. Bith are basically a 30 weight at operation viscosity after they shear down in about 500 miles.

Also PUP0w40 has close to 200ppm of trinuclear moly. The PUP is better for the Hemi for that reason alone.

Out of those 2 the PUP is a better choice. But if your truck runs nice and quiet on M1 you may want to stick with that.

Don't mess with success. If you've been blessed with a quiet Hemi, keep doing what you're doing.
