The Hemi tick. A good news story.

I have a 2015 1500 sport, 5.7 8 speed. I noticed the tick a couple weeks ago and it’s progressively gotten louder. Reading on here I had some worries it was the lifters. But I took my truck in for an oil change and asked them to check the noise before the oil change. They called and said it was the exhaust bolts and would be covered under warranty. Then this good news story turned sideways. The Service Advisor then began to tell me how his mechanic says the front pad and rotors have been overheated and needed to be replaced to the tune of $1200. After a minute of uncontrollable laugher I pulled myself together and said just the oil change for today. Funny enough he had no concern with me driving away with the brakes in “bad” condition. Short drive to the parts store and $300 in parts later. Stealerships eh? Only reason I go is the oil change is reasonable.

Mine is in the shop now with the same problem. We are on day 3 for the fix because they can't extract the broken bolts, don't have the parts, work backlog... keep getting the run around about why things are not getting done.

This is common practice for stealers that are having a slow day. Been that way as long as they have been around. Some worse than others.

I have a 2017 Bighorn w 26K miles that started making a really loud ticking shortly after my latest service. Thought it was a lifter but they said the Hemi is notorious for broken exhaust manifold bolts. Taking it in tomorrow. My warranty will cover the work and a rental truck for 5 days. Hoping that is long enough

I’ve got the 6.4 on my 2016 2500. Is the exhaust bolts an issue with the 6.4?

I had my 2013 1500 in for broken bolts about 2 weeks ago. An independent shop did the work not a dealer. They found 4 broken bolts. Total cost was $892. The truck has 110000 miles on it. The tick is gone and it seems like the power is back and fuel economy has improved.

I wonder why they haven't fixed this issue since it has been a problem on more than one model year?
Most likely even though its common, maybe it's not common enough to justify a recall or redesign????

I've had my '07 for 5 1/2 yrs. Bought her used from the dealership back in '13. She had 61,000 miles when I got her. Took her in within a couple of months because of the 'tick' noise and they told me it was the exhaust bolts and they were covered under the extended warranty. Today she has 125,500 and she still 'ticks' but usually goes away after she is warmed up.

It took the Stealership 1 day, they had to extract 1 stud and replace the manifold due to warping. Dropped it off 830pm the night before and picked her up at 430pm the next day. Don’t know what that would have cost but the $1500 extended warranty seems to be paying for itself right about now.

When the cam had to be replaced in my 2011 Sport, I found out it had broken manifold bolts. I never heard a tick at all. The problem is aluminum heads, cast exhaust manifold. The aluminum cools faster than the cast so the bolts break. I've thought about putting ARP bolts in it. Anyone tried this?

Yup! Last time I had it in (a few tens of thousands of miles ago), they said the front brakes were shot. I went to replace the pads myself later, found out they still had about 40%-50% left.

I have always had a little tick-tick upon start-up, but after 30 seconds it goes away and purrs---when owners talk about the hemi tick is it a sound that never goes away even after warm-up? even after a 30 minute drive? I expect a few ticks and other noises upon start-up for a few seconds after start-up and have heard them with every vehicle I have ever owned -but if they go away after warm-up then I consider it normal--Am I wrong?

Hemi tick usually only lasts 2-3 secs at most when you crank it up. If it takes more than 30+ secs to completely go away its probably broken exhaust manifold bolts. Hemi tick is also a GOD awful clattering sound that's not consistent whereas the broken exh. bolt sound is a very consistent sound that slowly goes away. Redline 5W30 will take care of HEMI tick and new exhaust manifold bolts or headers will take care of the other sound. HEMI tick may very well destroy your engine over time or at least cost you a new cam and lifters whereas broken exh. manifold bolts are just annoying and embarrassing.

The part numbers for the bolts, studs, and exhaust manifold gasket have changed several times indicating there's been several attempts to address this issue.

Where is your best source for Redline? I know its pricey, but $45 for a gallon on Amazon feels crazy.
