So I've been considering about getting a newer model ram1500, what year is the best year for tuning? The most I plan on doing is a mild cam and some longtubes, maybe a whipplecharger if I get talked into it lol

Anything before 15 you can tune with out having to buy a PCM along with a tuner--saves you about $300-$400 buck I think

So when buying a pcm on the new trucks have more tuning capabilities than the prior 2015 with a stock pcm and a tuner?

No it's just the tune on the pre 15 models will work with the existing PCM and in 15 and newer, the factory started to encrypt the PCM's and they(the tuning companies/tuners) had "unlock" the stock PCM so it would accept the tune. You can either send the 15 and newer PCM in to the tuning company and have them unlock it for you and they will send it back to you or you can purchase a "extra" PCM that has already been unlocked and then load a tune into it. You can contact Matt at Moe's Performance about the PCM's and tuners. He, Hemifever and Diablo have an exchange program for the PCM's so your truck does not have to be disabled while you wait for your PCM to be unlocked if you decide to go that route. This is sort of convoluted but I hope you can understand my babbling.

I would get a 2014 with the 8 speed tranny and 392 gears. Nice place to start.
I would skip the cam, the juice isn't worth the squeeze imo. You can go full bolt on and have a fast truck.

Get a newer model with the 8 speed. The trans will handle more power.

The cam was more for a better sound. Like fbo and a small cam to make it sound good as hell
