Tires - 35's on Stock Rims

back from 4 hours of running local logging roads, 1 flat changed out to the spare, the next morning getting ready to head off to work both of my rear tires were flat. The roads weren't that bad for a logging road. duratracs are out as soon as i can get it into the shop.

I just had these Kumho MT’s put on my truck today!

35x12.5R20

All I have is a 3” leveling kit in the front and the tires are on the stock 20” wheels and I have absolutely no rubbing not even at full lock in reverse. Many other forum members said you needed 1/4” spacers. I bought them and the installer said I didn’t need them at all and he was right!

According to numerous tire manufacturers, the minimum width of wheel one should use for a 35x12.5R17 is 8.5”. The stock and upgraded rims on the ‘19 are 8.0”. If I change out the rims to accommodate 35’s, should I stick with 17s or go to 18s? I am a bit concerned about too much sidewall being a target for puncture, especially when aired down. Thoughts and recommendations?

Yes, but most 35s need to have some or all of the air let out.

Regardless of air left in tire, anyone have success with a 35x12.5 Nitto Ridge Grappler in the spare spot? I am curious if that specific tire has worked for anyone.

I have the same size spare with full air in the spot. It's a snug fit but I got her in. I want to push back the heat shield a bit because it almost touches the tire but I don't have room to move it with my MF exhaust there so I may air down the tire some. It's no big deal if you carry a cheap air compressor/battery jumper with you.

Using a 12.5” wide tire on an 8” wide rim is completely fine, even if the manufacturer recommends a half inch wider wheel. It works just fine. People have been doing it forever with no issues. If you are really concerned about it, there are quite a few rated for 8” wheels.

I would be more concerned about less sidewall myself, especially when off road and aired down. I personally would stick with 17’s.

I don't own or run 35 12.5R17 tires on my stock 2016 PW 8" wide rims due to they're much too wide for our three to four seasons of winter snow and ice driving use at our higher altitude (10,000 feet plus) mountain trail locations. We still have have lots of snow up on the Grand Mesa even in mid-July. However, if I ever did go to a 12.50 width tire, most folks including yourself would probably be purchasing them from a tire retailer, not from a tire manufacturer. Discount Tire stores are some of the very few major tire retailers out here on the Western Slope of Colorado. Their website shows that 35 12.5R17 tires fit a rim as narrow as 7.5", even though the tire manufacturer may recommend a somewhat wider rim such as a minimum of 8.5".

Going to an 18" wheel with the same 35" height of tire and one will lose sidewall height versus a 17". A taller sidewall height is extremely important to help prevent any wheel damage. Our Rocky Mountains trails here our in fact "rocky" of which some of the trails are made up of just nothing but jagged sharp granite chunks of large rocks. Without a tall enough sidewall one would damage or break the wheels.

I’m always fearful of going under about 35# due to potential of popping a bead. Is there a thread that discusses beadlocks? I’m completely ignorant on the subject.

I drop psi to low 20’s to high teens when out in the dunes or mild/slow trails. Even with the stock tire/wheel. Never had an issue with popping a bead.

I had 315 70 17 Firestone MT2’s on the Jeep and I really liked them.
I’ll probably use this tire on the truck if the general consensus is they will fit.
