Too many Cam Position Sensor replacements?

Hi all!

I've owned my 04 truck for just about 3 years now. It has about 133k miles and runs really well.

The only thing that has consistently "failed" is the cam position sensor - check engine light then P3040 error code. I've just replaced the sensor for the third time and the time between replacements 2 & 3 was less than 6 months.

I have no engine noise, timing chain is silent and the engine starts and runs strong.

Any ideas what might be causing the sensors to fail or produce an error code? Are these sensors known to fail frequently?

They fail from time to time, what brand replacements were you using? Sounds odd they failed that close together.

All the sensors have come from Autozone and are the Duralast SU3180s. Good thing about them is they have a lifetime warranty so I've only had to purchase 1 - the replacements have been free. The installation only takes about 30 minutes so I'm not worried about doing it over and over again, mostly worried about what it might be masking.

id get an OEM sensor. Autozone might just not work so well

I agree I would install and OEM one in there.
