I could be mistaken, but I believe 2nd is the “passing” gear. In other words, any time you smash the gas, it’s doing to down shift to 2nd.
But I think you are right, it should not be staying in 2nd that long.

I will say though, my truck(2012 w/6speed) shifted oddly for several hundred miles after taking it in for service. Dealers explanation was that the computer had to “re-learn” how I drove. ‍♂️

This is not just downshift to pass. If yhat were true, it would have happened thousands of times by now. It's happened 1/2 a dozen times. No modern vehicle can say x gear is your passing gear. It all depends on many variables that all get analyzed by a computer far faster than my 60 yr old brain. Engine RPM, speed, current gear, axle ratio, current throttle position, throttle position delta, wheel slip, etc.

There are others who have experienced this, I just forget where I found their posts.

I drive Phx. to Show Low and clear one trip meter to see my mpg for a climb to the rim top an elevation change of almost +7000' and a lot of 6% grades up and down on the way. This stretch is hard on mpg so the last time I came up I used tow mode and driving 65 to 70 the truck did better getting with just under 20 mpg that is one mpg better and going faster than no tow. I did turn off tow on the longer downhill grades and when I am in a lot of steep up and down, tow mode goes on.
