So I’m looking to tow with my vehicle and on the trailer websites it’s saying when I put in my vin I can only tow up to 4200lb but when I put in my vin on dodge it gives me almost double that so if I bought a trailer that is 7000lb gross weight but dry is 4670 would my truck be ok? IF you have any tips on towing it would also be helpful first timer right here 7488AFC5-09C3-4420-8A4A-AC0BFDC8AE90.png

The RAM website's towing capacity web page is accurate if you've entered your VIN.

Keep in mind max payload and max towing are mutually exclusive. Max towing is calculated with an empty truck + driver, if you carry cargo and passengers in the truck you should reduce the towing capacity accordingly. In turn the trailer tongue weight reduces available payload. It's a multi-dimensional problem :)

I'll have to disagree with this statement, the Ram website shows my truck has a 0 lbs payload. The website isn't always accurate.

A 7K lbs trailer behind an EcoDiesel won't be a problem at all and unlike the Hemi you won't be in single digit fuel economy. The biggest thing will be making sure the WDH is adjusted properly with the truck and trailer fully loaded, it's best to use a CAT scale. Turn on the Tow/Haul mode and keep the rpms to about 3K max and enjoy the drive.

crash68 that is cause your truck is old and diesel, those aren't made to tow
I actually looked it up on the website when the truck was less than a year old. '15 was actually the first year that Ram officially used the SAE J2807 for towing specs.
At least my EcoDiesel doesn't struggle to make it past a gas station, even when towing. Let's see a Hemi make a 500 mile trip towing an 8K lbs trailer for half of the miles (trailer delivery) while burning less than 26 gallons of fuel.

Your payload might be a bigger issue than tow rating.

What is the length of the trailer? My general rule of thumb for a 1500 is 6k gross and under 28 ft.

4670 dry should fit the bill, but you should try and keep the loaded weight as low as possible until you get a better feel for the towing setup.

I've not seen that before. Did you try a second time, not that software has been known to screw the pooch every now and again?

I checked it several times over the course of about a year, several people got a good laugh about it. I haven't checked it in a few years, don't really matter much to me now.

I’d get the rig to a truck stop with a scale. You can answer most questions for $10!

I see other manufacturers break down tow behind and fifth wheel ratings with the fifth wheel being higher. Does this apply to Ram as well and where would that info be found? I’ve searched high and low on my 2017 2500 cc 4x4 6.4 with 3.73. I’ve done the VIN decoder and searched many guides and they all say about the same just under 13k. So that number applies to all types of towing on the Rams correct?

I would settle for my 5.7 making 500 miles "empty"... :sad72: Just got my best "Estimate to Emtpy" yesterday, at 470...

EDIT: and after the ~70 miles of commuting I do a day, it's at ~472.
