I'm deploying soon and I am trying to sell my truck before I leave. I want to step up to a 2500 when I get back. I've only had my truck for about a year and a half. I've put a bunch of money into it, I know I won't get it all back but trying to maximize what I get on trade in. At this point I'm just trying to get what I owe on it. Figured that was better than going in upside down. Asking anyone who has traded in within the first 2 years how'd you make out? Should I take whatever I added off before going to the dealership?

Unfortunately, most mods are virtually worth nothing at trade-in time. Selling private party..... maybe but most likely not much. So, strip and sell what you can separately.

Trade-in should be a last resort.... you get killed! You should be able to sell quickly private party for at least 10% more than a trade-in offer. The next month or so is tough with the holidays and weather and what not. Spring is always a great selling season for vehicles if you can it out.

Keep any upgrades you can. The dealer wont give you a dime for them.

might be worth kicking some tires and having a dealer do a trade appraisal. you can play the part and test drive the 2500 you want down the road. Tell the dealer the numbers don't work for you and leave with a ball park of what you can expect in a trade.

Dealerships are tough.... They really won't give you a trade in value.... What they'll try to do is get you into a 2500 "out the door" price with trade, but not give you the exact number of what they are giving you for it... Without pulling out all of their teeth to get that number out of them. I'd say, forget the trade in. As many of the other guys have said, dealerships aren't going to give you anything for your mods.... And really, nor will a private buyer. I vote that you take the mods off and either put them on your new 2500, or sell them separately. That will be the best way to recoup your money.

Remove the mods that you can. Sell or keep them depending on what will fit the new truck.

Being right side up or upside down depends on what you owe on the truck, the trade value of the truck and how those numbers play with what the dealer asks for the new truck.

Private sale value is always better than trade value.

Good luck and thank you for your service.
