So along with a list of mods/add-on I have in store for my truck, I want to take care of a few service things first..

There's a specialized transmission shop in town that said for $150 they will drive the truck to see if anything is abnormal witn the tranny, pull the pan, tighten the band's and refill the tranny... but my question is: I've herd some mechcanics say at this point in the game (truck is 14 yrs old and 80,000 miles) that the best thing to do is just keep the fluid level good and don't worry about flushing or emptying the fluid.

Whats your guys thoughts?

The 150$ is money well spent. One of the biggest things about these trannies is just general lack of maintenance. At 80000 the truck is ideal for a tranny flush. In fact I believe 80000 is the milage that the dealer recommends from the factory for the first flush.

I've herd flushes can be the absolute death of trannys...? The $150 is just a pan drop and band tighten

As of now my fluid is still red for the most part but not quite the red that the fluid is when it's new

Don't flush it. Change the fluid and filter. That's it. Flushing CAN lead to transmission death if it's not done from day one.

That's what I've herd, I would do it myself but I don't want to risk tightening the band's incorrectly.

I agree with these guys. Never flush a trans. It takes to much friction out of the fluid. Some clutch debris in the fluid is a good thing.
I don't know what mods your doing but nows the time for a shift kit and a cooler.
Those 2 things with proper maintenance will keep a 46r alive for a long time.

My truck (01 4x4 Larmie) comes with a coolerror if I'm not mistaken? Up front there is the radiator and a small factory auxiliary cooler that has tranny lines in and out of it

Any idea how what cost I'm looking at for a shift kit installation?

Depends on the kit. A trans go Jr kit is a good shift improver kit. $30 on amazon. If you have a shop do it it will probably be about $250 in labor. As a guess

Not at all true for mild or shift improver kits. These kit will actually increase your milage. Not by a lot but it will
Less clutch slip = less time not transferring energy to the wheels-reduces wasted energy. A shift improver kit like the Jr kit will not raise your shift points any noticeable amount. Just more line pressure and improved springs and metering hole for faster firmer shifts
