I'm getting a "Service Transmission " message on my dash. Does not stay on long enough to read though. Any ideas?

Hi cubmedic,
If you choose to have your dealer look into this, you can also send us a private message where we can offer an extra layer of assistance in case you have any questions or concerns while your truck is in being serviced.

wondering about driving in the 4XAuto mode?....book says its good for up to 55mph.....implies lower gas mpg due to front box use......any benefit to 'exercising' the front box on short trips around town?

Zero benefit to using any of the 4x4 modes when not needed. You can actually cause harm by doing it on dry roads.

Is that true for the auto mode ? Thought in automode it only activated when slip is detected.

True, it only activates the clutch when slip is detected, but the front axle is still engaged so you’re technically going to use more fuel.

If you have the other t-case with no auto mode that actually locks completely into 4x4, you can/will cause damage driving it on dry pavement.

That's the way it typically works. The front axle will be live with auto 4x4 on and the transfer case only sends power to the front axle when the E-clutch in the T-case is activated.

It will put a little more drag on the truck in auto 4x4 mode, but there should be no binding or damage being done

***Sorry Tach-tech, you beat me to it!

At least you are getting a code! I have had my transmission serviced and then replaced. Less than 5k miles later trans temps through the roof and it is slipping and shifting hard. Temps above 255 Fahrenheit, gave dealer same information and documentation as last time. Now they tell me if it doesn't throw a code it's ok! Only 51k on truck! Never road anything. Only load it has had was a load of mulch then a load of fire wood!
