Hey guys, I'm curious what average transmission temp is on my 2014 1500 sport hemi. The alarm keeps sounding that my temp is too high so I have to slow down or stop to let it cool. My truck only has 27k miles and I put it on 24's a year ago. I looked up the weight of my wheels and they're only 45lbs each, not much heavier than the stock 20's if at all. I've taken it to the dealer twice (about to go in again for the same issue tonight) and they've consistently told me nothing is wrong. I call bs because the transmission's been whining on the freeway now and definitely grabs hard coming from a complete stop. I've called a lemon law attorney to see what my options are, I just want to know if anyone has experienced anything like this.

And what is the transmission temp are you seeing?? You seem to be leaving a few important facts out of your story.

The alarm goes off at 275 degrees so I pull over and let it cool. Mind you it overheats without towing or hauling, just freeway commuting to work. Yesterday I made is 30 miles before it overheated and I had to let it cool.

Not Towing during the summer months I average 190-192*F
Towing I normally see 195-200*F Never Higher!

As you well are aware! You have an issue! As for what is the cause? I have no idea..

If you haven't noticed any transmission leaks... I bet your fluid level is ok...But it might not be a bad idea to remove the fill plug and see if fluid runs out... Hopefully there will be...

Nothing good within a Transmission can be imagined if the fluid is over 230*F for a long period of time...
Get it to your dealer ASAP is my advice...

Look into High-Temp ATF and oil coolers, but I wouldn't do anything for at least 10k miles, in other words if it is going to fail, let it. High-Temp ATF gives you 70 extra degrees of performance.

If the dealer is not going to recognize that something is wrong, then run it until it blows and then maybe your dealer will listen. Or look for a new dealer. There is something going on with temps that high.

Anyhow as long as you have warranty left, check this out., apprx time your tranny will fail at that temp. Stop pulling over and letting it cool, punch it and let it fail. Don't make any statements at all when it fails, just point out the many times you had it in their shop for this issue. Go getcha a new tranny.

That may apply to the older 6-speeds (I've seen that chart or ones similar since the 4-speed days when I owned a 2001 Ram 1500), but the newer 8-speeds are designed to run very close to 200 degrees.

Regardless, anywhere near 275 for even the 8-speed and I'd definitely say a problem exists. Like others said, find a different dealer. Take a short video with your smartphone of the alarm/temperature to show it to them, in case they try and pull the whole "unable to duplicate problem" trick.

Fluid levels and diagnostics (according to the dealer) came back normal they said. I dropped it off tonight so time will tell what they say. I'm pretty mechanically inclined so when I tell them there's an issue and they refuse to fix it I'm getting pretty irritated. It's crazy that they think nothing is wrong when I show them pictures of the temp that high on my daily commute to work... And I'm paying for a rental car up front because they "need to verify its a warranty issue." Thanks for the info guys I'll keep you updated on the results

Well they claim average temps for the 8 speed is between 190-225, so mine is still way higher than average. Of course, the dealer claims they can't reproduce the problem.. Until I asked them how far they drove it. I'm making them drive it over 30 miles then tell me what the temp reaches. They want me to pay for the rental car because apparently this isn't a warranty issue. I can't wait to raise hell when I get off work. By the way.. DO NOT GO TO Autonation Ram of Valencia, California!

Kevin: I know fluid is not your issue! But has anyone found another fluid substitute for the ZF Lifeguard 8?

Every review of this fluid I have read have been mostly negative comments...

Kevin: Your issue is bad news... Keep us posted...

At the bottom of the page is shows -->Popular product and application crossover:

ZF Lifeguard 8 - Shell M-L12108
(BMW # 83 22 2 152 426 and VW/AUDI # G 060 162) Am I reading this correct?

I havean issue with my tranny, it's grinds when engaging reverse. I have 2 recipts saying all is normal, so I'm going to run it till it blows! 6speed here! Anywho call customer service, they are very nice and helpful and they help push this through your dealer! Stone ridge Chrysler is crap too

I would run that thing until it blows find a nice grade leave it im 4-5 gear and floor it up a steep grade! I bet you your tranny cooler is plugged with some debris or something (if it has on, not sure)

Yeah, that chart is a little out dated.
It pretty much applies to every trans besides the 8 speed.

I too have read on here about the 8 speed runs hot or hotter than the 5/6 speed. I'm kinda glad I have the 5 speed because what I'm used to anything norther of 200ish is not good on a tranny.

I'm not sure what they did with the 4th gen 5/6 speeds but they stay super cool. The highest mine got was 190* sitting in traffic when it was 95* hot. Then as soon as I start moving it drops to 170*.

I'm surprised your trans is still working at 275*. You might have some trash in the lines or something blocking the flow because that is WAY too high.

After reading this post yesterday, I watched my trans temp on my EVIC going home from work. '14 4x4 Express with 6 spd. Temp never got over 100, it is winter here and only in the 20's, but, I did pull a 10' enclosed trailer with two dirt bikes and gear in the fall, in OD at 65-70 mph and trans never got above 120. Checked temp because I wanted to keep trans in OD for fuel economy and not have to go to tow/haul mode and didn't want to overheat the fluid.
