Well, the other day I decided "I'm gonna check my oil" to my surprise I was a ****** quart low. I immediately dove under the truck, inspected all hoses, seals, and the pan. No leaks whatsoever anywhere outside the motor, what you guys think. I've only got maybe 1500 - 2k on it since my last change?

Is this the first time you have used synthetic in it?

Yes, before I ran it I changed in some cheap oil and substituted the 5th quart for some engine cleanout miracle juice for about 30 minutes of runtime and then put in the RP.

Most people use a quart or 2 during the first couple thousand miles when they first switch to synthetic. Add some now then change your oil at about 3-4K from last oil change then you should be good to go for and oil change every 6k or so. Also, some of those cleanout additives can do more harm than good.

I'll do that, but at a hundred bucks an oil change I can't be doin this way too often. The additives I know aren't all great but after putting in crisp golden oil plus the additive and then 30 minutes later seeing that once golden oil come out blacker than Kanye West (I'm not racist, that was a joke lol) I think it was a good idea to at least get some crap outta there.

I think you will be ok, maybe have to add another half quart in another 1K. After that you should not use any. Your truck i s not doing anything abnormal by using some oil right now.

Nice to know, seeing this was my first change to full Syn I'll keep an eye out for this. Also is it just me or does the 287 only take 6qt? Yes I added oil to the filter before putting it on there. Periodically check every week just to make sure and it's reading just fine on the d.stick

Theres no way its $100 a change. unless he's paying someone else to do it. RP is about $8/qt. plus a nice filter and its only max $70

...unless the 5.9 gasser needs 11 qts lol

70 bucks on oil still. These are not race engines.

I forgot to factor in the other oil I used, 100 bucks included the flush of crap oil with the additive I forgot all about how much that part cost. For the RP AF's right it was around 70-75 bucks, I got a K&N oil filter as well so that had a bit to do with it. I know it's not a race engine, but the way I drive it might as well be one. I want this motor to LAST, I wanna drive it hard and this is how I repay it by keeping it well oiled or lubed or however you want to say it. :D

Run Mobil 1, get the two 5 qt jug at walmart for $27 each, and a filter, $70 and you have some left over for the next change.

Sadly dodge states these motors can burn I think 2.5 quarts between changes but mine has never burned a drop. The flushes tend to cause stuff to move and clog up the oil pickup from what I have heard.

If you have the 5.9 you may want to look at the plenum gasket. Those motors are known for it going bad and when it does it will draw the oil into the intake and cause your motor to burn the oil. I think if I'm not mistaken Hughes makes a fix for the 5.9's to where it puts a billit aluminum plate between the intake and the motor with a seal that will stop the leak.

Yea, I'm aware of that retarded design on Dodge's part. I brought it up with my boss and he tells me it's not blown.... yet, if he didn't have 30 years of experience I wouldn't believe him.

I'll second this one. My 5.9 used to go through 1.5 to 2 qts between oil changes. After putting the Hughes plate on it didn't use oil at all.
