I lived in Europe a while. Even at US has prices, the state and federal taxes per gallon are far greater than the oil company profit per gallon. You can verify by looking at the public financial statements, and the Govt has no risk of loss to worry about - guaranteed profit for them.
Just a brief rant about gas prices.
Love my truck. Don't like driving cars. I get they are not ever going to be fuel sippers. BUT, traded in my 17 MPG chevy for my 12.5 MPG ram and gas prices are up nearly $0.50 since the day I bought it.\
I love my new Ram. This weekend I'm adding the last of the mods I have sitting in the garage and will get pics up, but damn talk about kicking a guy when he's down. Add to that I only put 89 in it and my wallet's a bit bruised...
Trade in for a pentastar ram or an ecodiesel. My pentastar ram averaged 23 mpg and my new ecodiesel averages 27 and I like it way more
I've got a 99 Camaro SS that actually gets mid 20s mpg when driven normally (which rarely happens). If mileage is an issue, you have to get a second car for when you don't need the truck. With 35s and 3.75" lift I get about 15-16 mpg..slightly more when tuned for MPGs with the diablosport. Actually planning to sell the Camaro to get some type of 4 cylinder for commuting

Good in theory...
However, as was previously mentioned, figure in cost of 2nd vehicle, insurance, maintenance, etc and gas for it?
It would probably take a long time to offset the cost of fuel.
But, hehe, I have found it most beneficial to have a 2nd vehicle if one goes down.
