UConnect update?

After what I went though last month I thought I was OK, after it to my dealer two days to unlock the screen. This morning, I received a notification on screen that I "would be receiving" and update, and it would take about 10 minutes. I clicked OK, nothing happened. This was on startup from the gym, and on the 15 minutes to the office, zippo. Ride home, zippo.

Over on the Viper forums, the updates are hitting us now as well. Several have posted, one locked. My car hasn't been out of the garage, nor started, in 3 weeks. It is coming out Friday for a charity event, so I suspect I have a pop-up waiting for me.....

I'll see what the Ram does tomorrow. This crap is getting old.

Just curious how long between the time everyone received the email that the OTA hit? I got the email 2 weeks ago and still nothing. I have such spotty service at my house though so not sure it will connect from there. Does it only pop up on start up as well or when you are driving down the road?

AFAIK it will pop up after you shut the truck off...cant remember if its before you open the door or after.

BTW I was thinking about it.....there are other Over The Air patches distributed to many devices: for cell phone updates.

BUT the difference is that Google and Apple will NOT OTA on a cell signal. Why is that? Well, cell signals are not really reliable, especially on devices in motion (changing cell towers, etc).

So, why does UConnect assume that every single affected vehicle will have access to a strong, stable, Sprint cell connection? Just look at Sprints coverage map (hint: do NOT use the one on Sprint's website) and tell me if you think every affected FCA vehicle is going to be successful with an OTA update.

It looks like it is a required update for a GPS fix.

If you have navigation (either an RA3 unit that you paid for the nav unlock or an RA4 unit that came with nav from the factory): without the update the nav will be, at best, inaccurate and at worst completely inoperable.

If you do NOT have navigation, it wont affect you unless you at some point pay to unlock the nav feature. At which point, without the update, same thing as above....inaccurate and/or inoperable.

Mine has the R8.4 with nav if I remember correctly.

Just look for the nav icon in the bottom row on screen (assuming you didnt move icons and replace it with something else)

Have you ever used nav? Its a pretty good indicator if your truck has it

If so, you will need the update by November 3rd.

Something else that might be affected even on non-nav units is the time. By default it is synced to GPS so that will probably get messed up as well. You can go in at disable that and set it manually so that may be a work around.

Yes, forgot about this. Time is actually at the heart of the matter, as time is used in making accurate location estimates.

When I first booted up my RA4 after swapping it for my original RA3, the time was off by 2 hours and GPS would not lock. Location and time were stuck where the donor truck was wrecked (New Mexico). No amount of futzing would get it un-stuck, so as a last resort I manually flashed 17.43.01 which (after a 10 minute drive) actually resolved the issues.

I would expect similar symptoms after Nov 3 if the head unit has not been updated with the 18.x release. Still curious if, at least in my case, 17.43.01 was "the fix" for my head unit since it did have the expected symptoms already, that were resolved after updating.

All above makes me happy I have an old plain 4C non-Nav, non-emergency BS Uconnect system with AppleCar PLay and Android. NONE of the UCONNECT ISSUES as unit not running it,

Sometimes, my slight not checking when got the truck was a plus... Lucky Me, I think.....


THE last time I did the update on MY 15 before I sold, I would not do OTA. Waited for flash option, and had properly formatted "clean" flash and did all, no problems....

Honestly I like the 8.4 setup in our trucks. Decent audio quality for stock (even non-Alpine), the user interface is nice and its probably the best factory nav I have ever used.

The real issue is the OTA bs, if they just gave up on that and let people install themselves (or those who dont want to, have the dealer install free of charge), the system would be perfect.

They also need to build in a way to roll back to older firmwares. The downloadable files look like they are complete system images, so there should be no reason you cant just flash a complete downloaded image again, regardless of what version is currently on the radio.

So far, nothing additional has happened on the truck. As for the Viper -

Took the car out this afternoon (first time driven or started in 3 week), after about 20 minutes of driving to my destination, pop-up appeared. Asked me now or later, I chose now. Shut the car off, got out locked it, and the screen stayed lit while it went thought the update. Took less than 15 minutes. Restarted, no issues. Nothing changed. Got another pop-up that said I was updated.

Anyone found a way to force the OTA to show up? I had it popup once, and I scheduled it for a later time but it never installed. Its been over a week now and I haven't seen it pop back up. I tried pulling the radio fuse (left it out over 2 hours) and while it wiped out my radio stations at first, they all came back within a minute or so. Maybe I'll try pulling the battery..

I hope I can get this installed.. I'm driving from NC to Florida and back the first week of November and don't need the NAV spazzing out on me..

Mine did the same thing... Still shows the notification if I go into "Notifications" but doesn't pop up anymore at startup and hasn't updated yet either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
