I know lubeguard seems to keep the wifes 6.4 Challenger happier. It's been sitting on the driveway for a little over a month with-out being started, the other day it finally warmed up enough to start it.I was expecting to hear a serious lifter rattle with PUP 0W-40 after the car had sat that long, but it was dead quiet on start-up. I have to admit i'm a fan of lube guard now, with an oil like PUP 0W-40

I do not have Hemi tick with my 6.4. 26k miles. What I do have now and again is the 1-3 second startup clatter, sounds to me like it's lifter bleed down. So far I've tried Amsoil 0w40, PUP 0w40, and Redline 0w40 to combat it. Still had no hemi tick with any of them. If I had to pick a winner on least start up rattle out of these 3, it would be PUP on a 5k change interval but none of them eliminated it. Amsoil may have a slight advantage over redline but I'm still running the redline. The order of success is also the same with lower viscosity (better) to higher so I may try a 5w30 in the future. *All subjective testing.

Any issues with the 5w-40 in the 6.4? My son is all over the country and usually has to get his oil changed on Sundays at a Jiffy Lube place but none ever have the 0W-40. He has had a hard time finding it and usually has to buy it himself and take it to the Jiffy Lube for them to change it. He can find 5w-40 though. Ordering it usually isn't an answer either because his company will call and tell him he has to leave the next morning and be 1000 miles away with no advanced notice. He was in TX and ordered something and had to leave the day before it was delivered so his co-worker got a free gift out of it....lol. He is in Thief River Falls, Minnesota now but hasn't looked around yet but he is about 2000 miles over his oil change and needs to get it done ASAP. He was going to get it changed the Sunday after he left Texas but got a call on Tuesday that he had to leave Wednesday morning for Minnesota so didn't have a chance to get it changed.
Why not change it himself? It is a 15 min job max.

Regarding the "tick" - the objective here is to prevent valve lifter and cam failure - not just to "prevent a tick". It is thought the "tick" is indicative of premature lifter roller wear, leading to the failure eventually. The goal is to prevent the failure, therefore minimizing or preventing the tick.

The tick we discuss is not a bleed down tick at startup, it is the permanent tick. The goal is not to wait until it starts and then try to treat it - the goal is to prevent it entirely. Due to the reported success of posters in eliminating the tick after it started, the suggested approach is to use the Red Line 5W-30 BEFORE the tick starts - in hope of never having it at all.

I cant imagine his company is not paying for his vehicle gas and maintenance. Let the ram dealer handle it

Yep. Safety coordinator for his company.

He usually changes it before it is due but he was told at about 4:00PM on Tuesday that he had to leave first thing Wednesday morning for Minnesota. His manager actually wasn't happy that he couldn't work Thursday but it was about a 20 hour drive. He reported to work Friday morning. He had been told he would be in Texas a few more months. It was about 1200 miles to Minnesota so by the time he got there he was quite a bit over and he has had alot of issues with his water lines freezing in his camper so has spent the last couple of Sundays getting that figured out. He has only been there 2 Sundays I think and he works Monday through Saturday about 12-14 hours a day so Sunday is his only option.

Good to know about NAPA. I will let him know. He hasn't had a chance to look around that town yet but assumed it would be hard to find there too.

He flew home yesterday so is here now but headed back there Sunday morning. And truck is out of warranty. He has about 73,000 miles on it (yeah it's a 2018)

Thanks!
I use Amsoil 5w 30 winter ! 5w 40 summer seems ok for me ? u buy and ships to u ! you can buy gallon jugs too !

Need 0W-40 FULL synthetic. My guess would be jiffy stooge is not putting in full synthetic and that WILL void the warranty!

They are 'paying for it' but dealers aren't open on Sundays. He work 12-14 hours a day 6 days a week.

He found the oil at the Napa out there so has it but now looking for a place that can change it. They have some company trucks there so he is going to see about borrowing one while his gets done so then the dealer would be an option. But he is 'supposed' to be leaving there in the next week or so and heading towards eastern PA so another 1500 mile trek...lol

And yeah he has no tools or facilities to do it himself. With everything he has to lug around with him he can't be carrying anything extra. He used to do all of his own work on his cars but that isn't feasible now being on the road.

Sounds like he’s making the big bucks working the extra overtime. I’m scratching my head why a pipe liner/inspector/quality control can’t wrangle up $20 worth of tools to drop the oil. The nearest Walmart has everything a working man needs to get the job done. I’ve been there pipelining in California pumping the 6/12s and honestly enjoyed Sunday work time on my truck in the hotel parking lot. Any Walmart 5w40, 0w40, 10w40, 15w40 is better than not changing it at all. The funniest story I have was a San Francisco kid working with us bragging how he had amsoil in his 6” lifted Chevy LMM so he could go 25k miles without an oil change , I asked him to check his oil level and it wasn’t even on the dipstick. He freaked out and said I dunno what to do, they don’t sell
Amsoil out here! I laughed and gave him some rotella t6.

Went from 5w20 to 10W30 this year with 330,000 km and no tick while running or on startup. I was advised to do this by a retired 70 year old race car driver and engine builder. Knows a lot about lube and taught courses on the subject. Going to 10W40 next change on his counsel as well. He indicated the wear on my engine (5.7 hemi 2008 three quarter ton SLT 6 speed standard) would warrant this and the change would cause no problems. This fellow owns a 1963 Dodge with a 426 hemi he drives to church and in parades. Totally original. Do not know model of car but seen it twice. Has push button gear selector. I have enough confidence in the fellow to risk this. Synthetic oil use since 100,000 on odometer. No major problems as original owner of new truck. Regular change of worn out starter, tires, battery, exhaust censors, alternator, serpentine, pulleys, spark plugs and other small things that Law of Entropy affects. Truck is work truck in tree service business, hauling heavy loads and trailer towing. Has given good service and expect engine to make 500,000 miles based on current mechanical condition. Close to halfway there.

For starters it's about 5* on a typical day there so I don't blame him for not changing it himself. And as much as he has to bounce around he really has nowhere to store a drain pan while traveling. I went with him to Texas and his truck and camper were packed. His back seat was packed up to the back window, the bed was full and the pass through storage on the camper was full. Often times he has to haul a bunch of the office equipment with him. Small refrigerators, large flat screen TV's etc. When we went to Texas we hit the CAT scales and his camper was only about 300 under GVWR and his truck had 700lbs of extra stuff in it. Not much room for anything so for the $30 or whatever he would save doing it himself it isn't worth it. Could he do it himself? Sure. Is it worth it? No. Normally he can get it changed on time but with the short notice he had this last trip he didn't get a chance to have it done. This was the only time he has been over by anything significant but he does have trouble finding the oil. No quick lube shops carry it and he can only do it on a Sunday. He was able to get a company loaner for Wednesday so scheduled it for then but often times they don't have a loaner available.
And he gets no OT. He is salary so he gets screwed pretty bad. He makes about 1/2 to 1/3 of what the laborers make. He has a B.S. degree in Safety Management.

I have been running Shell Rotella in my last 3 Power wagons. Knock on wood but with 5W-40 I have never had the Hemi Tick with over half a million miles logged on all 3 trucks.

Just click on the user’s name and will give youthe otion to ignore that user. Works great.

I used to belong to a beemer forum and it was kind of cool the people on your ignore list would automatically show up on the side below your name.
