Diesel or no diesel ? That is the question. Is the trans. better in 1 than the other or are they the same? I know we need a 2500 or should we step up to a 3500 ?

If it’s dry weight 12,000 lbs in my opinion I would just get a 3500 even if it’s a single rear wheel. The 2500 is a great platform but the diesel 2500 has less payload than the gas 2500 due to the suspension and axles. The srw diesel 3500 will probably suit your needs perfectly.

3500 DRW would be my suggestion. Get the HO option with the Cummins 6.7L rated @ 1000 lb/ft of torque & the Aisin transmission.

Negative... the GVWR is 10000# for both the diesel and gas 2500’s. The drivetrain of the diesel weighs more than the gas variant which accounts for the deficit in payload.

I too would recommend the 3500 HO.

You don't need the diesel for that light a trailer, but it does pull easier. Gas has 8spd, diesel still a 6 and worth the add on for aisin. Unless your state taxes and charges heavy for the hd trucks just go 3500. You can always go to a lighter rear springs and bags on the 3500 later, but you get the bigger GAWR sticker. Apart from springs the 2500 and 3500 are virtually identical.Skip the dually. They ride like crap unless loaded and are a bigger pain to park etc when using it for not trailering duty. I leave the dually in 20k plus towing territory.

2500 6.4L Hemi 4.10's 'Off-Road'
2500 diesel will be way overloaded based on payload. Pretty likely even a 2500 6.4 Hemi would be over payload as well so a 3500 would be needed either way. For that much weight I would go diesel. I can't answer whether SRW would be enough but dually definitely would be. For me I use mine as a daily driver so no way would I want a dually but I'm also not towing that heavy. Either way 3500 will be a minimum. A 2500 Cummins only has about 2100lbs or so of payload and pin weight would likely be at least 2000lbs and probably closer to 2500 or more. My 2500 6.4 Hemi has 2973lbs of payload and I'd probably be over or very close with that load. If you do go gasser make sure it has the 4.10's for sure. You will need the added tow capacity

To add to what @BWL said, I think a gasser would do it with the 4.10's but if you are towing far or often you will wish you got the Cummins. You are probably looking at over 20,000lbs GCWR (probably closer to 22,000). My sons setup was 16,180 with his 2500 6.4 and although it towed it well I think 18,000 would have been the limits for feeling good about it. There were a few hills where we were pushing 4500-5000 RPMs so at 20,000 we would be closer to that range quite often

By the dually in 20,000 lb+ plus territory I mean just the trailer. I see hotshots registered at 22,000 kg gvwr on 1 ton duallies. Also if I ever go dually it's a 4500 because it has the wider front axle so it's more stable and turns on a dime.
