I bought a 27' toy hauler about two weeks ago and the dealer assured me my 1500 would do great with it. I'm sure I'm not the first one to fall for that. After I towed it home I knew I had to trade up. I did have a WDH hitch installed and it may have not been set up correctly, though my 1500 did set close to level with the 1k tongue weight of the trailer.

Last week I bit the bullet and traded for a 2018 2500 6.7. Had to sell off my 01.5 2500 Dodge to help with the down payment. Question is, should I keep using the WDH on my new truck? Also what tire pressures are y"all running on a 2500 when empty.

One more ? How many miles do I need to have on the truck before I start towing.

Thanks, JC

I'd use the hitch, more comfortable to tow with, adds a margin of safety in a hard braking or handling situation. I think Ram says 500 miles breakin before towing.

Before my current 5th wheel I had a very similar sized travel trailer to yours. I usually used the WDH but honestly couldn't tell much difference. The tongue weight of that trailer is a drop in the bucket to what the truck is capable of. However, you should definitely always use some sway control. These trailers are just like big sails and can catch a wind gust in the blink of an eye.

I run my tires at 60 front, 80 rear whether towing or not. The rear does bounce a lot more than I'd like but I guess that's just life with an HD truck. I've aired the rears down to 60 and it doesn't get that much better..... and I get an annoying light on my dash.

Have a dealer re calibrate the tpms in your truck to match the tire pressure you want. It’s usually a free service and any dealer can do it not just Ram I wouldn’t got to a small shop as it’s a special tool.
