Hey all. My 2011 Ram 1500 is making a weird whirring/vibration/shallow grinding sound from the transmission area when I'm in 5th going up a grade that is not "downshift worthy". Anybody have an experience like this? The dealership has it, but they seem puzzled.

If a transmission makes noises, it depends on what. It does make some noises.

but- most of the noises are not normal and especially if they suddenly appear, they are absolutely not normal.
I always wonder, why they are not taking the tranny out and taking it apart. how else you want to see, what's wrong?
seems like they want to avoid any repairs.

Yeah, they seem to be trying to do as little as possible. What's really aggravating is I only had it for 2 weeks and they have had it for about 1.5 weeks. It has been making the noise since I bought it. Even the service manager says it doesn't sound right. The story is a lot longer, but I don't need to air that crap here.

it has still powertrain warranty. I would ask him straight forward- do you want to fix the problem, or you just waiting, till the 60 month are over? I mean- if he knows and agrees, that there is something wrong- what holds him back to figure it out? and if that means, take the tranny out and open it, well, then you gotta do, what you gotta do. And if they find the issue, report it to the manufacturer and either fix it or change the tranny. easy as pie.
Give him the choice- either give your money back or fix it. I never heard of such, how pansy the dealers are, if it comes to a repair.
I think the biggest problem is, they ain't got nobody who has the skills to do it. I see it every day. believe me. take their repair manual away and they don't even know what a screw driver is.
sorry to hear. hope you have luck with that.

Update:

Dealership said it was my hood out of alignment and vibrating against a body panel. However, the noise was still there on my way home:banghead:. I think I give up.

Go to another dealer or get a second opinion from a transmission shop.
