I just purchased a 2014 black out edition 1500 on 6/3/2014. It has been raining here in Oklahoma so I have not had time to take it back to the dealership to get it detailed. We finally got some nice weather so I took it in on 6/11/2014 and when I picked it up around 4 hours later the detail crew put about 5 deep scratches in the side of my bed. I spoke with the service manager and he said they are going to have to repaint that area. This is the first brand new vehicle I have ever owned, so is it to much to ask that I do not want a repainted truck. I mean the truck has less than 250 miles on it. Have any of you had issues like this? what would you do in this situation? I am thinking about asking for a different truck. I think what ****** me off the most is that the scratches stand out so bad on the black paint that someone seen it and did not say anything. I have worked in dealerships and understand accidents happen, but shouldn't they have caught the problem and told me about it. Also they did give me a brand new loaner truck to drive till mine is fixed.

Your first mistake was bringing to the dealer to have them clean regardless if it was free. Take it to a professional detailer.

I mean don't they have young kids cleaning cars...

I think the only options is to have it re-painted although that could be a nightmare too. Friend had paint problems on his new hyundai. Needed to get it re-painted, got it back and the paint was even worse.

I really doubt they would give you a new truck, but no sure.
Good luck..

Plenty of new trucks have dings and scratches and paint flaws fixed (i.e., including repainting) by the dealer before you ever get to see them. That doesn't make them any less new.

I am not sure why you went back to the dealer for detailing but it sounds like it was a separate transaction from purchasing the truck, even if it was some deal that was "part of the purchase". In that case, it is just as if you took it to some other shop for the detailing. They will need to make it right. You are not required to have them fix it; you can get it fixed somewhere else. Getting it fixed by the shop that messed it up would be easier, though: no dealing with estimates and insurance and arguing over the repair cost. But if you don't trust them, don't have them do it.

I do feel for you. You want that new truck to stay scratch and dent free (and clean) for as long as possible. Getting it scratched up with only 2 weeks and 250 miles on it really stinks.

@BADUNIT I understand things happen before vehicles are purchased and fixed without anybody ever knowing. I used to work at a motorcycle dealership an we would receive bikes and quads with damage and just file freight damage and fix them. I am giving them the chance to make it right by allowing them to fix it. If they do not make it look new again then I will go from there as to what I have to do next. i went back to the dealer because i purchased the truck around 10pm on 6/3/2014 and they did not have time to detail it, so they told me to bring it back and get it detailed and do a walk around to make sure there was no damage on the truck.

@JasonK94Z David Stanley Dodge in Midwest City. sales was really helpful and made me a killer deal on my truck, but don't get your truck detailed there.

@BlownGP I want my truck i love it and it is exactly what i wanted minus a couple options, and the deal was great, but i don't want to deal with the headache like your friend has.

Sorry to hear about the scratches. Do you have photos you can share?? Depending on the size/depth of the scratch they possibly could be buffed out (or at least a lot less noticeable) I would be very hesitant to have the shop that scratched my truck do a respray on the one damaged panel.

I might start by asking for a new truck since this thing is practically brand new off the lot. If not...I would like to do any sort of repair without the need of a full respray.

They won't give you a new truck. Repaint is fine if it's done right. Dealers hire childrens to do this work now. I have seen it. It's a shame but I always pass on a detail from the dealer. I won't let them wash or touch it for this reason.....

@Sybil I have learned my lesson. I will never let them touch my truck again. You say they will not give me a new truck and that is fine i love my truck, but do i not have the right to receive my truck back from them in the same condition i left it. What if they fix it and it doesn't look right?

@13Hemi I do have photos just not on this computer I will post some tonight when i get home. There is no getting these out with a buffer. You can feel them with your finger nail. I was thinking the same thing about having them respray the whole bed. If i get it back from them and it is not right I think i will ask for a new truck or to repaint the whole bed.

Get the repaint, and never go back. Anything beyond the paint they offered you will be a battle not worth going through. Enjoy your new truck and take it elsewhere in the future.
Sorry to hear about it all though, it does suck and especially on a new ride.

They are not too bad, however it is a brand spankin new truck. To me, it doesn't hurt to at least discuss the potential of swapping for a new truck. I would work my way all the way to the top of the dealer. Whats the worst they can say??? If it's no, at least you tried. You can always talk with them before the repaint and confirm unless it is to your satisfaction, you are not taking back the truck.

I had a very similar issue with a Mustang GT I bought about 5 years ago. Noticed a small drive line noise about 1000 miles after purchase. Took it back to the dealer to repair. After it was in and out of the shop about 6 times in one month I was finally able to convince them to to replace my Mustang with another one and they did.

I understand most dealers are different, but again it doesn't hurt to ask.

Good Luck!!

Take that picture and think of about a 3 foot by 3 foot section of the bed. that is the size of the area where all the scratches are. I spoke with the sales manager and he said they buffed the small ones out but the big ones are still there. they will get it repainted Monday morning, I was told by my best friend who is also my insurance agent that if i am not happy with the job they do i can file a claim against them and get it fixed correctly at whatever body i choose. Needless to say once this is over and my truck is back to 100% the way it was i will never do business their again. i was actually working a deal on a new black on black charger rt to match my truck for my wife.

I find that dealerships are only good for one thing. Selling vehicles. The service departments are generally known for having not so stellar customer service skills. I do all detailing myself. It is way cheaper and no one gets in my truck.

I can sympathize however. I just bought a 2014 Laramie. If they scratched my paint I would find a way to make them make it right. Either touch it up, give me free oil changes, gas cards, etc. Tell Yelp about their sweet performance too. Get management involved. Show them what their lazy employees did to your paint.

They aren't going to give you a new truck and I don't think it's reasonable of you to think that they should.

They damaged something, and they offered to fix it. I understand your concern about a proper repair, but give them the chance to square it up. Inspect it VERY carefully when it's done to ensure they did it right, (and do NOT take it back if it isn't done right!) but it's a little crazy to expect a whole new truck because of some scratches.

Hell, it'd be more reasonable to ask for a replacement bed than a replacement truck.

I'm in agreement with jcat above.

I would be livid if this happened to my truck, and I entirely understand your frustration.
I hope the dealership has a quality body shop and does a proper job repairing this panel.

As others have said they won't give you a new truck. It's as if you had it detailed at another location, they just have to make it right. That said, if the owner of the dealership is really good they may make it right with a new truck, but I'd be shocked if they did.

The reason I am commenting though, you said you were working on a deal for a Charger ... USE THIS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!! You could get a few thousand off if you play your cards right, I would milk it for everything it's worth. Let the salesperson you dealt with know you're going elsewhere because of this fiasco; I bet they do whatever they can to make you happy. Get the car cheap then get it serviced elsewhere.

Spoke to the service manager and they do not do the paint work at the dealership. They send it to a local body shop they have used for 10+ years to have it fixed. I told him I was not taking my truck back until it was 100% back to new like I dropped it off. He assured me they do great work and that if i am not 100% satisfied they will go another route of fixing it. I should have my truck back by 6/18. Once this is over i will never take any vehicles back there.

Similar thing happened to me in April, had my bed Line X'ed and they got overspray on the bed, took back and showed them and they said it happens and they can remove easily. Anyways they couldn't and said they'd have a body shop fix it, well it turns out it was some little dinky shop that I'm not sure even had a spray booth. So I said Noooo way and we agreed to have my body shop do it. Needed the bedside resprayed and they did an awesome job. The new paint is warranted for life....vs 3years for the rest of the truck. Make sure the shop explains exactly what they are going to paint, and make sure they just don't tape it off, that they disassemble everything they need to to get around the corners so it doesn't peel in a few years.
