LOL.. iv got access to plenty of free tires from the ford dealer in town. this is about 80 tires, (thought it was enough), I think I needed about 100 to do 1 wall but it can be added to later.

as for the ammo... am always accepting donations LOL :naughty: but prefer 9mm, 7.62x39, 308 win, 22LR to name my most used.

Good hear about your experience towing a decent load, looks like the 6.4 has plenty of power to move loads down the road......ANd up hills.

Good luck with the range building project.....

Ill be completely honest. I want to disregard my statement that i said a few mounts ago that went something like this "if you plan on towing over 10,000 lbs the 6.4 can do it but Id rather get the CTD because it will be more comfortable **** it" I know I said something like that. Well let me tell you that on my slightly hilly ( not the Ike danno) terrain I live In I know now that the 6.4 truck would have no problem towing my max trailer weight of 12,470 and/or the CGVW of 19,900.

no need for a CTD for me as I have a 6.4 HEMI:happy107:

There is a very big difference in towing 13k with little wind resistance versus towing 9k with a lot of wind resistance.

Understandable. I didn't mention wind resistance to be fair. Or 13,000. But I get your point wind resistance does matter.

From flat ground to the foothills of the Rockies the 6.4l pulls well. If you plan on towing close to GCVW up extended 7+% grades and/or 8,000' regularly it isn't the right choice, but then neither are the other gas offerings.

I do it at over 90% GCWR with a big Toy Hauler. I may have lost 3 minutes in 14 months of ownership towing at those weights.

I didn't realize truck choice hinged opon a drag race up a mountain.

My truck will never see any noticeable or measurable grade that I would have to worry about. Just a few small Michigan hills here and there.

I know you didn't mention it and didn't say you did. I mentioned it.

A vehicle should have no problems pulling its max rated weight if the trailer has little wind resistance. However, if that trailer had a lot of wind resistance then that vehicle would have problems pulling its max rating. I personally think that max tow rating should drop the more surface area whatever you are towing has.

No kidding. My f150 was down right scary pulling a 7000ish pound camper with a side wind.

I completely agree. I also think a person should not buy a vehicle if they think they are going to be towing the max capacity of that vehicle on a regular basis. 80% or less of max towing capacity would be a good marker for load if you plan on towing regularly.

But that is just my opinion.

That makes a lot of sense. It would be very useful and interesting if someone could come up with A few guidelines regarding wind resistance and lowering your tow rating. Figuring the wind resistance wouldn't be too difficult but how to lower the tow rating accordingly I think would.

My buddy with a 2015 Cummins 2500 tows 2-3 times per week and around 18,000lbs twice a month. I keep telling him to get a dually, but he says he doesn't need one. He's a Chevy guy, but his work got him a Ram. He keeps saying a Duramax could do it with no trouble. The thing he keeps forgetting is he is over the max trailer weight for the truck (17,200lbs or something). 18k is over the max towing capacity for all 3/4 ton trucks.

He's too hard headed to listen to anyone else. He says dually a are for people who tow 4+ days a week. Which is so much more than 3 days a week.

Ford does specify frontal area considerations for max tow weights.

...and that's one reason I'm VERY leery of buying a used 2500/250 diesel

Considering the frontal area and wind impact is a very real dynamic to consider. My old horse trailer empty tipped the scales at maybe 2500-2800lbs but had the frontal dynamics of a dumpster and at speed towed much heavier than the actual weight suggested. My new slant front trailer weighs in much heavier than the old Cotner yet tows so much lighter at speed from a perception standpoint.

Hauling heavy

Bought my truck in Mar 2016 I have hauled 15k on my gooseneck that weighs 6k. GCW was just under 30k. I was able to maintain 80mph except for a few hills that I had to downshift to 5th for and go up at 68mph. I recently moved from SLC, UT to Boise, ID. Every weekend I would go grab more stuff to move up. This is a picture of my longest load to date. It's about 75' front bumper to boat prop and weighs a little over 23k GCW.

Final trip with the family

This trip was in a hurry to get done so I had my cruise set at 85mph. It's amazing how many people as soon as you pass them go to pass you again, because they don't want to be passed by the guy pulling doubles. But once they pass you and realize they are going close to 90 in a 80 zone. And they slow down, so I pass them again.

very cool. i wonder how many actually consider the guide ford supplied befor purchasing a TT/5th wheel.

me too. and if I was going to tow that even once a month id get a dully. it much more suited for it.....IMO
