but prefer 9mm, 7.62x39, 308 win, 22LR to name my most used.Good hear about your experience towing a decent load, looks like the 6.4 has plenty of power to move loads down the road......ANd up hills.
Good luck with the range building project.....

There is a very big difference in towing 13k with little wind resistance versus towing 9k with a lot of wind resistance.
Understandable. I didn't mention wind resistance to be fair. Or 13,000. But I get your point wind resistance does matter.
I know you didn't mention it and didn't say you did. I mentioned.
A vehicle should have no problems pulling its max rated weight if the trailer has little wind resistance. However, if that trailer had a lot of wind resistance then that vehicle would have problems pulling its max rating. I personally think that max tow rating should drop the more surface area whatever you are towing has.
I completely agree. I also think a person should not buy a vehicle if they think they are going to be towing the max capacity of that vehicle on a regular basis. 80% or less of max towing capacity would be a good marker for load if you plan on towing regularly.
But that is just my opinion.
Ford does specify frontal area considerations for max tow weights. That makes a lot of sense. It would be very useful and interesting if someone could come up with A few guidelines regarding wind resistance and lowering your tow rating. Figuring the wind resistance wouldn't be too difficult but how to lower the tow rating accordingly I think would.
...and that's one reason I'm VERY leery of buying a used 2500/250 dieselMy buddy with a 2015 Cummins 2500 tows 2-3 times per week and around 18,000lbs twice a month. I keep telling him to get a dually, but he says he doesn't need one. He's a Chevy guy, but his work got him a Ram. He keeps saying a Duramax could do it with no trouble. The thing he keeps forgetting is he is over the max trailer weight for the truck (17,200lbs or something). 18k is over the max towing capacity for all 3/4 ton trucks.
He's too hard headed to listen to anyone else. He says dually a are for people who tow 4+ days a week. Which is so much more than 3 days a week.

This trip was in a hurry to get done so I had my cruise set at 85mph. It's amazing how many people as soon as you pass them go to pass you again, because they don't want to be passed by the guy pulling doubles. But once they pass you and realize they are going close to 90 in a 80 zone. And they slow down, so I pass them again.
