I have almost 9000 miles on my 2019 truck with the 3.92, 5.7, and the 20" limited rims. Its mileage was 20.2 according to the gauge after driving from Maryland to New Jersey this past weekend. For the majority of the trip I used ACC set mostly between 72 and 78. It may be a coincidence but I changed to Mobile 1 synthetic just before this trip and prior to the oil change my best mileage on similar trips had been 19.1.

Evening folks. Newbie to the forum so hope you can assist. I just test drove a 2019 Big Horn quad cab today and was curious if any body else has the same truck with 3.92 gearing and the 5.7? I am wondering what to expect on the highway vs the 3.21 gears. I don't tow a lot, and when I do, it's just my fishing boat or ATV and utility trailer. Any help would be appreciated.

Tim - I know I'm probably far too late on this response but the mileage is absolutely terrible. Though my sticker said between 17 and 21 with an average of 19 I truly average under 13. Never towed, no heavy loads in the back, my average is with 40% highway and 60% street. The dealer told me it's because of the 3.92 and that the sticker is the averages for ALL the Ram vehicles.

Though I love the ride I certainly would have gone elsewhere. This thing is going to cost me a fortune and I've only owned it 9 months..

Computer shows 14.4 around town. Took it on a 2000 mile road trip running limit +10% on cruise control and it got up to 19.8 on the computer. Seems to be right in line as advertised.

Geez...I just picked up mine 2 weeks ago. 5.7 2wd and my display is showing 13mpg. 20in wheels. I got mine used with 7K miles on it. It also has a more aggressive Nitto tire but not sure how much that impacts things. I live in Atlanta and drive about 20 miles back and forth to work plus surface street suburban terrain. Not sure what I am doing wrong? My right foot isn't that crazy!

How do I know what gear ratio I have?

The biggest impact on fuel economy is speed. At 80 mph there is 4 times as much air drag as at 40 mph. With my diesel truck I get 22 mpg at 55 mph and 17 mpg at 75 mph.

If I am driving 150 miles to a destination then going faster may save me 30 minutes. But if I am driving 15 miles to my destination then I save 3 minutes at most. I have to decide if arriving 3 minutes sooner is worth burning through more fuel or not.

Changing gears or tires is incidental by comparison to the speed at which a vehicle is driven and how much of the trip is done while the engine is below its optimum operating temperature (especially with a diesel engine).

My rebel gets 15ish on the highway at 75 mph and 10 in stop and go city driving. 3.92s and 33s with 5.7L (no etorque).

Miles per gallon is primarily a function of how fast you drive the truck and how long your trips tend to be. I can get 30% more MPG at 55 than at 75 as the air drag increases exponentially with speed and gears have nothing to do with it.

Truck manufacturers care about an extra 1/2 mpg for their fleet CAFE numbers but it makes zero sense to go with tall gears for the truck owner. That 1/2 mile per gallon over 100,000 miles of driving will save you $600. Hardly worth worrying about.

On the other hand the truck with the lower gears will be in the peak power band of the engine at lower RPM's and lower speeds and that makes for faster acceleration when having to merge with freeway traffic. My diesel truck has 3.73 gears but with every gas powered truck I have always gone with 4.10 gears (and the tow package).

Miles per gallon is primarily a function of fuel burned and miles traveled in my experience. But seriously, gearing affects fuel consumption, manufacturers wouldn’t have added overdrive decades ago and now multiple overdrives. Why doesn’t everything just have a powerglide if rpm doesn’t affect fuel consumption? 3.92 vs 3.21 means 22% higher revs, definitely a significant amount.

I have a 2019 - 3.92/5.7 all stock w/13,000 miles

I sold my 2014 3.21/5.7 all stock w/55, 000 miles.

The 2014 w/3.21 consistently got 10% better mpg on the hwy but about the same in city.

87 Octane, driving normal (5 mph over on hwy), hand calculated. Dropped in a can of Seafoam 2X per year.

Both trucks had tonneau covers & carried very little weight. No towing/hauling.

2019 - 15/19
2014 - 15/21

I preferred the 3.21 because it ran lower RPMs on hwy and I drive a lot more hwy miles.

Seemed like the 3.21 was more relaxed at highway speeds because it wasn't working as hard...but I do really like my 3.92 as well. Both ride/rode super smooth.

3.21 was a Big Horn std. suspension. But I did replace the OEM shocks with Bilstein 5100 miles at 40k. Changed to Michelin tires. Much better ride.

3.92 is a Laramie w/really smooth OEM air ride.

I found the mpg on both trucks got a little better after broken in (5-6,000 miles).

I'm actually curious about the pentastar engine on the rams. Is there really a big difference in mpg? Love the hemi power, and it's great for towing, and passing in traffic when you need it, but is mpg on the v6 a big difference...in real world..lol

Crew cab 5.7 with 3.92's highway at 70mph with cruise control between VA and TN I average 21.5 MPG with 87 octane. Around town I average 14.5. I'd go as far as to say I'm a bit lead footed around town too.

I have done these calculations before too. my typical road trip is from DFW to northern new mexico for skiing or 4 wheeling. around 650 miles each way. my '17 sierra with 3.42 rear end got 2 more miles per gallon on the highway so took 3 less gallons to do that trip vs my '19 ram..so I am paying 7.50-8.00$ more each way. the benefit to me tho is the increased capability when towing and hauling with the lower gears which is why I own a truck and not a mini cooper.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

The mileage is atrocious on the 2019 5.7/3.92 with ecoboost. I get 12.4 in the city, never towed, rarely carry anything but a couple of pieces of lumber. That mileage is calculated by hand and the truck. I've complained to FCA and the local dealerships and even had the VT attorney general go to the FCA. The FCA response was simply that mileage varies. What a ripoff and Ram lie.

More people should report their mileage at https://www.fueleconomy.gov/ so others going there first would see what users are reporting rather than just believing the salesman.

12.4! That’s great. I get 10mpg in the city, with or without the mods. However that is only 1 gallon per work day, so I don’t mind.

You lost me on the believing the salesman part...why oh why does anyone trust anything a salesman says? Also I believe you are referring to etorque, as ecoboost is the ford twin turbo setups.

How many miles are on the truck? I've heard that during the break in the fuel mileage can be pretty low. I think that's around what I get mileage wise as well but it's not really a concern I have when buying trucks, and I drive fairly aggressively so I'm not really paying attention to the rate of consumption. How does it do on the highway, if you've had it on any longer interstate trips?

I have a new 2019 Ram 1500 with the hemi and a 3.93 rear. I have only about 1K miles on it. Thus far....I am really impressed with the gas mileage. Averaging 21 mpg on highway. Got rid of a 2003 Chevy 2500 HD with a 6.0 and 4.10 rear.....that sucker was a gas hog. Same size tank...26 gal....used to get 300 miles per tank....now over 500 miles. Love the mileage of the new truck.
