What's your gas mileage with 3.92 gearing and the 5.7?

I dont think you can expect very good mileage in city driving..the 8 spd. tranny has a very low first gear..4.56 I think..with the 3.92 rear end and low first gear you will churning the motor a lot in stop and go driving. I think I get around 15 in town but it depends on how may lights you have to stop at and then get back up to speed. at least the 8spd. shifts really smoothly thru the gears..

OK folks, I'm reading these posts because I'm considering buying a new 1/2 ton truck. I need 4WD up here in the hills---snow outside right now. My old 2001 1500 "Off Road" 4WD has the old style 5.9 gas, 3+OD auto and 4.10 gears (and 170K miles). It's rated to tow 7600#. I get a calculated 10 to 11 mpg's around town in the hills--I used to get a little better with Michelins but now have more aggressive BFG's (16 inch). The very best highway mileage I ever got was on cruise control doing 55 mph pulling an empty flatbed car trailer on flat freeway---16mpg. Now you where I'm at.
I'm not unhappy with my current 245hp so I think a new Ram 4WD with the V6 would work fine for me and with the 3.55 diff option they rate it to tow 7450# which is legal for the regular-duty 2-axle car trailer (7,000#) like I have. I do not "Hot Rod" my truck, I have a 3.0 Z4 for that.
Bottom line: Does anyone out there have good real-life mileage figures for the 1/2-ton 4WD model with the V6? And are you regretting not buying the bigger motor?

For some reason FCA has got their MPG EPA off a dialed back plain jane work truck and has applied it to all with heavy options. And I think they finally addressed the complaint that the mpg readout was never accurate. Fill it up, let it click off once for 30 secs then top off to the next click. then repeat at next fill-up and don't cheat on you calculator. 15MPG seems to be mine with hill driving. 17 mpg on flat. 3:92 gears no e-torgue. Fully loaded with air ride Longhorn with 20" tires. My Ford F150 with Coyote is a little less with 6-speed. The 10 speeds are coming and ruling in GM and ford. Another 2 mpg

It’s a pig on gas. 2019 with 15000 miles, no towing, no hauling - 9.8 city, 19.7 highway at 65mph for 3 hours.

Something definitely wrong there. Heck, I'm getting 12 MPG in my 7200lb 2500 with a 6.4. My 2013 1500 got about 14 in town until it got up in miles and my step-fathers last 3 1500's (all 5.7's with 3.92s) got around 18 or so mixed but he really doesn't do much stop and go driving. More rural. But 10 MPG in your truck is definitely an issue. Either there is something wrong with your truck, your calculations, or you are racing from light to light

I’ve been round and round with the local dealership, the area manager, and fca itself including through my attorney generals office. All of them point the fingers at the the federal government blaming the way it gets calculated. Ram and fca are sham artists who point fingers at everyone else but themselves.

I’m on my second 5.7 / 3:92. First one, a 2017 that is my son’s now averages mid to high teens in primarily city driving, relatively level terrain. It took a while to break into that but your at 15K so break in isn’t your issue. My 2019 is still under 3K so it’s still not really broke in and not a good barometer but even at that I’m beating what your reporting.

You can run ethanol blend but I found it doesn’t pay. You’ll suffer in both power and fuel economy. I never use it. If I’m in an area that forces it I’ll burn higher octane fuels.

So many factors contribute to fuel economy; terrain, fuel type and blend, average payload but the biggest is personal driving habits. You may very well have a mechanical issue but I’d take a hard look at everything else before raising too big of a fuss and alienating your dealership.

If you firmly believe it’s mechanical then reach out to FCA in a calm and professional manner. You’ll get better results. Been there: In 2003 they took back a truck with 3,500 miles on it and let me pick a new one off the lot. Granted it wasn’t FCA in 2003 but I’d still follow the same path today if I felt I needed to.

I did not read thoroughly this post before my first response. You have reached out to FCA.

If you still firmly believe your poor fuel mileage is a mechanical issue unique to you truck, you may need to consider reaching out through a private attorney. The AGs office, a government office in itself, is not likely to place a high priority on going to bat over less than expected fuel mileage from one big engine bearing truck owner. Bring a hundred friends with the same issues and maybe then they will listen.

While my truck was in the shop I had a 2014 1500 with 3.92s and the 8 speed and got about 21 MPG on the highway. My step-father has a 2017 Laramie Longhorn with the 5.7 and 3.92s and he said he gets about 22 MPG highway. I would imagine a 2019 would be similar or maybe a little better
That is very similar to what I am seeing on my 2019 1500 Tradesman with 5.7hemi and 3.92 rear. I have the tow package and 4x4.....love the mileage and the truck.

Evening folks. Newbie to the forum so hope you can assist. I just test drove a 2019 Big Horn quad cab today and was curious if any body else has the same truck with 3.92 gearing and the 5.7? I am wondering what to expect on the highway vs the 3.21 gears. I don't tow a lot, and when I do, it's just my fishing boat or ATV and utility trailer. Any help would be appreciated.
Got the 2020 Limited 5.7 and the 3.92. Just completed a 850 mile trip and got 22.7 mpg. I’m satisfied.

2019 Ram 1500 Limited, 5.7, 3.92, 20" wheels. At least 300 lbs of tools in the bed. No wind, I'll average ~18.5 mpg doing 77 mph on the highway.

Just did an almost 300 mile trip (each way, so almost 600 total) the other weekend.
2020 Limited, 3.92 gears, 5.7 (no eTorque), 4x4, Falken A/T tires on 18" Rebel rims. At the time had just under 1000 miles, so she is still "breaking in."

It was a rare occasion when there was only a little wind. Speed limit is 80 on the interstate here, so I was always at that or a bit higher. Got just shy of 17 MPG.
On the way back, same speeds, but had a 20+ MPH headwind. Got just shy of 14 MPG.

For trips on highways where the speed limit is 65 or a little less, I can frequently get 20+ MPG. Once you get much over 70-75, MPG starts dropping quite quickly, especially out here in the plains where the winds can get quite high (relatively speaking) and seem to always be blowing the wrong direction.

I had 500 miles on my 2020 Laramie, 3.92 E-torque, Off-Road package when we left for Waco, Tx from Milwaukee last month. A week and 3600 miles later we got back home. The trip odometer calculator showed 19.1 MPG average for the entire trip. That is a lot of highway at 75-80+ mph and a bunch of local/city driving in Amarillo, Houston, and Waco. I assume it is a cumulative total on that calculator and not the most recent say 500 mile or something like that. I didn't do the hand calculations based on the fill ups. Either way, I was pleased with the mileage and performance of the truck compared to my '13 F150 it replaced.
