So what are the advantages/disadvantages of wheel widths? I understand offset and backspacing, but I'm trying to decide between a 9" or 10" wheel. Why choose one over the other?

If offsets are the same. A 10" wide wheel will sit out farther from the fenders.

For trucks, the main advantage for a wider wheel is too run wider tires. Looks for the most part. For other vehicles or lowered/sporty trucks it will increase handing and/or traction.

Also keep in the mind, wider wheel, with a wider increases rolling resists, so your MPG will go down some. If you care. lol

Thanks for the info. I have a stock 2015 Big Horn with stock 20x9 wheels. I'm looking to install a 4" lift, level, and change wheels and go to 35" tires. Knowing all that, would 9" wheel matter much over a 10" wheel? Also looking at a 0 or -12 offset. I'd like the tire to peek out just a little from the fender for a meaner stance.

go with the 9" wheel. 0 offset will stick out about 3/4" further than your stock wheels. -12mm offset will be about 1.25" out further. That is just to the lip of the wheel.

This is what I'm thinking... thanks!

Probably go with the -12mm

Yeah, then go with the 9" wide wheel if you want a little wider stance.

It comes down to the "stance" you want. Plus it's always best to stick with the tire manufacturers recommendation on wheel width for their tires. Don't do like some kids and try to mount a 12.50 inch wide tire on a 14 inch wide wheel! You can sometimes go outside the recommendations, but at least stay close. For instance, my last tires were recommended for a minimum wheel width of 10 inches. But for 35k miles I had perfect tread wear on 9 inch wide wheels. Hopefully I'll have the same results with my new setup (I'm running an inch wider wheel than Toyo recommends).
