I used whatever I could find ref my vehicles. Last one I had for a 67 Chevy Impala SS. Helped a lot when working on the motor. Especially since I am/was not a trained mechanic, just known as a driveway/backyard wrench turner, LOL. Had an "A" frame in Mom's driveway. SHE was neva happy about that.

I drip with envy.

How long did you have that car?

Bout 1 1/2 years when I was teenager. We blew the 396. Dropped in a 327 with Bored out heads and pulled the intake from the 396, and dropped it on the 327, since it had a Rochester mounted, with the PITA dashpot, and heat spring chokes, etc.,. Had to weld a lead bar under front bumper for weight difference. Ran that 327 till we burned it up. Dropped in 2 gallons of old used motor oil and drove it to the junkyard. Made a good mosquito spray vehicle, LOL. The things you could do say in '73 neva do now, LOL.

FYI: It had 3 on tree, all manual. We pulled the 3 speed and put in a 4 speed Saginaw. We never did get them shift rods right, lmao. Of course we had to cold chisel in tranny hump to mount 4 speed shifter, we just covered the excess hole with a rug, necessity the mother of invention. Ran straight pipes with Thrush. U hear that monster coming a mile away, lol.

I can completely understand your point of view and would prefer the hard copy too.

I had the OEM service manuals for most vehicles I've owned during the 80s & 90s and might consider spending a few $ if there was a manual available for my RAM.

It's time to face the facts of our current existence, they're no longer available unless you're prepared to sell a kidney to buy one, if you can find it.

You don't need to drag your tablet under the truck while it's shedding road kill and local area feces or mash grease loaded fingers into the keyboard. LOL

Leave it on a nearby workbench, stretch a piece of saran wrap over the keyboard (external keyboard required for shop use) and find what you require.

An older used laptop is remarkably cheaper than a tablet but the tablet does sound more dramatic for this discussion.

If you really need to see the details while under the truck, print off the page and go.

The service manual for my last truck was priced at about $450. I got by with a virtual copy for free and printed pages when necessary.

The dealership was nearby and the parts guys would often print the pages I required.

We can all keep crying till the cows come home or just get on with it. We're here now and it's just easier to use the tools that are available instead of continuing to sob.

This post is not directed at any individual. Tulecreeper, your post was just a handy starting point for my rant.
While I understand your point, there are a couple glitches with it - mostly about printing out a copy of "the page". I can't tell you how many times I've been going through the Haynes or Chilton manual and it says, "Refer to Page 341", which in turn refers you to "Page 165", which in turn takes you back to Page 226 where you originally started. My back can't take getting out from under the truck 27 times in 30 minutes to keep looking at the thing, and I wouldn't know how to print a page using a tablet anyway as I'm in the shop and the printer is in the house wired to my PC. :banghead:

That's a tempting offer/gamble.

Why don't you test-buy and report your findings?

$80 US and they compile a manual based on your VIN.

Firstly, I would never buy a soft or hard copy of a Chilton's or Haynes manual without being able to preview it end to end, see my previous comments about those manuals.

I agree, many of them are glorified fire starter material.

And secondly, it sounds like you're creating complications against using the softcopy versions instead of looking for solutions. Best of luck with that.

I agree, being able to drag that manual around while you're working is much preferred, let me know if you're successful in purchasing that custom $80 manual. I'd spring for that pretty quickly.

Uh, you first. :emotions36: I asked because the price is way cheaper than I would have thought it should be. Hell, the manual for my 2000 Silverado was about $40, and that was 20 years ago and a much easier vehicle to work on. Besides, I'm slowly slipping into "not-working-on-my-own-truck" mode these days. It's not as fun as it was in days of yore.

Thanks for the reminder that my PC is past due for a full backup.

With the low cost of a portable SSD these days, having a dedicated backup device with a free backup software is most cost effective, not to mention the piece of mind it provides.

This isn't a specific recommendation, only an example. Like any purchase, I'd suggest researching to identify a reliable and most cost effective device.

There are many free backup programs available, Macrium Reflect is my preference and was most common among the users at my former tenforums.com hangout.

I went with a digital hard drive per advice of my computer guy. I do back up too. I also have MOTO-LOGIC by Advanced Auto Parts for us professionals, so, there's that foe me. It costs me just under a hundred a month. What I really like is how quickly they get me info that is more deep space nine.

I have the factory manual for my old 1989 RAM D-150. I bought it years back when, after my wife took the truck to the country to look at property, drove back, and parked it.... and it would not start again. It would crank just fine, but it quit very suddenly... would not start the next morning. After referring to my information diags, I had an inkling it was the computer. I bought this manual used off E-bay and it was/is wonderful. It took me through diagnostics right to the computer. I put a reman on it, and never had any more problems.

Eric O from the YouTube channel South Main Auto did an episode on technical documents from all the manufacturers. As you would guess, they are all available for a monthly subscription fee. Some offer short-term access for a smaller fee. It is just another profit center for them and another hurdle for us to overcome.

Eric O. mumbles like Popeye! ;) I wonder if they're related!!!

Yes, the days of mechanical spinner hard drives are long gone and I wouldn't use one for an OS if it was free. That's good advice to buy an SSD.

OS = operating system.
SSD = solid state drive that has no moving parts.

However, I have an SSD for the OS and a spinner for the data drive on this PC.

Glad to hear you have a backup regime, for anyone who doesn't, I hope you're prepared for the inevitable loss of your data/programs/files. That is not an if, but a when for that loss.

Macrium Reflect is a free program to save an image of the drive on a Windows PC. If this PC were to be stolen, hit by lightning, or otherwise destroyed, I could simply copy the image from a backup portable drive (also an SSD) and install it on another PC.

I hope your backup routine is image-based.

Would that be the site I quoted from Tulecreeper?

I suspect you must be using McAfee, Norton, or another hypersensitive antivirus program.

I toured around on the site and received no alarms or upset from my PC.

My antivirus periodically protests and I have to accept the risk and continue. :)

Sometimes I have to wonder if the antivirus companies just $hit list a particular site for a completely invalid reasons.

That must of been the experimental 396,if you could bolt it's intake onto a small block 327,lol. The 396 is a big block, and it's intake is alot wider/bigger then the 327 small block intakes were.
A 427 and 396 are interchangable though

The internet is loaded with information, some of it is definitely malicious and we should all feel comfortable to visit or not visit any site.

This site may have had a complaint or complaints that could have resulted in them being listed by one or more antivirus programs.

At tenforums.com we often used the VirusTotal site to verify the safety of files or urls.

The website that's tripping your antivirus measures clean at 89 of 90 antivirus sites and trips 1 antivirus for phishing.
