I also have a 12,000lb winch on my 2012, 1500. However, I made a custom mount and put it behind the stock bumper.

I think you’d be more likely to damage the frame with a small winch and extreme cable angles, long before you would with a large winch and pulling straight on.

So more power is better, okay thank you both. I want to do the hidden winch as to me that is just bada**. I just dont want to mess up my truck hahaha. I am a Network Tech not a mechanic : /. I build for the family in terms of house, lawn mower, typical dad stuff but when it comes to my truck... I am just very hesitant. Probably because I have a warranty still.

12K winch is what you need. Keep a snatchblock in the trunk to double the tow load. I had a smittybilt 12K on my 4 door wrangler that weighed a lot less than a ram.

I've been thinking about doing something like this for my 15 ram 1500 sport. I've been hesitant though because of the way the bumper is and where the cable would be sliding out.

Iooked at some sport bumper pics. Looks like the overall shape is very similar to my big horn bumper. Even the insert looks to be the same shape. Shouldn’t be to hard to fine tune the height of the mount and fairlead to get the cable exactly where you want it.

Here’s a pic of where mine comes through the bumper.

There is enough space, that if you wanted, you could move the winch back, and keep the fairlead behind the bumper as well.
Or do like I did, and hide the rollers and hook behind a front plate.

I have a 17500lbs winch on my ram. I like the bigger winch for a bigger cable[1/2 inch] and top layer cap of 11500lbs.Also draws less amps because it dosenot work as hard pulling. Its mounted in a very heavy duty trail ready bumper. Bumper and winch weight is over 500 lbs. truck5 (2).png 27750530_10155287568442963_6364894033296644869_n (3).jpg
