I have this whining noise coming from the front of the engine. It gets louder with more throttle, does not change by turning the wheel. I checked the belt and the pulleys they seem fine. Idk what else it could be.

No its coming from the engine bay up front. It sounds similar to a power steering pump but it doesn't get louder or change by turning the wheel. You can hear it at idle and it gets louder as I accelerate moving or in park.

It's an idler pulley, the only way to find out which one it is, is to pull the belt and spin them. Find which one is making the grinding sound or loose.

I did that. The stationary one spins fine doesn't feel loose or grinding and the pulley on the tensioner seem a little loose but when I went to get the new one it felt the same. I would just change them both just too see if that's it I just hate being a parts changer.

I understand the feeling, you don't live by and go to the beach by any chance do you? Only reason for asking is the beach is #1 killer for bearings.

No not often. It's real dusty where I live. Lots of dirt roads. I guess I'll change them and cross my fingers

The only reason behind saying that it's the idler's is I've had the same symptoms in my last 2 trucks and I replaced them and all was good after.

If you want to be more certain though, you can get yourself a long ratchet extension and very carefully place one end on the bolts to the pulley's and listen for grinding.

So not to freak you out or anything, but my truck has a wine to it as well.

I took it in thinking it was the trans, they said nope its coming from the motor. As you rev it in park or accelerate it gets louder. So they found a Star Case that said to replace the oil pump - did that, no change. Next step was to replace the cam and lifters - did that, and the noise went away (kinda). For the most part the noise was gone, no where near as loud as it was. I had a feeling it was going to come back. Sure enough 2 months later its back. Now, before i left after it was "fixed" they said the next step in the Star Case is to replace the motor (long block) per Chrysler.

Motor ordered, I have an apt on Monday to drop it off..

You should have a 5/100k powertrain. I would take it in.. If your interested I can give you the Star Case #.

Ok that sounds good. Unfortunately I have a diablo tuner. If I remove everything and reset to factory do you think I'll be good?

remove the tuner before you take it to the dealer and you should be fine.

I have a whining noise that seems to come from the area behind the passenger dash, can hear it clearly when slowing down, almost sounds like a grounding issue when someone doesnt wire the stereo in properly. But it aint.

Got 3400 miles on it now, still no change.

It's obviously the two whiny greenies in the Prius crushed up against your exhaust manifold. :burnout:

I had a guy hualin' ass down the road yesterday in a not so Smart car. I said to myself what's this!? So I blew the doors off when I passed him... guess I had so much side air flow coming off my truck it was like big side wind hit him and he got a lil squirley.

Sometimes, you can spray the idler bearing with WD-40 and see if the noise changes/goes away.

Not a fix. but might help pinpoint.

(Bad Idlers, to me, make a squeeking noise, not a 'whine')
