I want everyone to go out under the passenger seat and try to take out your jack

Just because I read this, had to go out and check my truck, 2016 w/24k miles in Southern California. Unscrewed just fine. I still applied some grease, Park Tool PPL-1 Polylube 1000, since that is what I have with me.

Checked the jack on my '14 today. No problems, but I suspect that's because I have the underside fluid filmed. The hold down bolt going through the floor is definitely an official "BAD DESIGN" though.

My 2012 only had 7500 miles on it when I attempted to remove the jack and tools to remove the spare... The whole set up is a complete joke!!!! It was no different with my RCSB. The wing nut is ridiculous and the **** poor design of the spare tire "hoist" is laughable. My spare is now in my bed(even before the 35's) and a bottle jack and real tools have replaced my Ram's tinker toy tools. Lmao!!! Since the bumper jack has gone, its a chore to change a tire on the road.
BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD DAYS!!! hahaha!!

I as well was unaware of this poor design idea, and will be looking at this.

Now that I know it's a 6mm, I may get a replacement and rig it up from the underside. I like one of the suggestions... bolt going up from the bottom with a washer, probably a rubber washer on both sides, and some sort of silicone to seal it up... put a lock nut on top (inside the cab), then a wing nut to hold the jack down.

I've had to use mine twice in the last 6 months and it came out fine, but doesn't hurt to fix a bad design, just in case. I've got 62k miles on my truck so far.

I learned my lesson a couple years ago … went to Florida to visit my in-laws and ended up with a flat by running over a sea shell … I took a look at the jack and decided to call roadside assistance instead … I didn't even bother to remove the flimsy looking thing as it was a front tire that went flat and I didn't think the jack would even lift the front end … Now when I go a long distance trip I take my floor jack and cordless impact wrench as I had to wait for an hour before roadside showed up …
I can attest that the jack will lift the front end safely off the ground even on an old forest service road...and yup, a bottle jack likely would have been easier...

I took mine out for some reason 8 months ago or so and had to use channel locks as well.

I was fortunate in that I was at home when I found this out (the very first thing I put on the truck, not even a couple days after buying it, was a hitch receiver... gotta lower the tire to do that, so...) It wasn't rusted, but it was tight as hell. I mean, tight enough that I momentarily wondered what kind of impact wrench attachment existed to get it that tight...

Good point about greasing it, though. Still, I made sure that a pair of channel-locks got tossed under the back seat just in case.

Mine comes out fine. The only reason it's still there though is because it's a handy place to hold that long rod that lowers the spare. For actual jacking, I have a 20-ton bottle jack behind the read seat.

Well, I got a chance to try mine out last night. Picked up a screw in the right rear tire picking up my sister from the airport. I knew everything was in good shape from previous checking, but this was the first time using the factory jack. It worked, but just barely got the rear end high enough. Going to buy an extra bottle jack to keep in the bed now. On the plus side, I now know for certain that the TPMS system works as intended.

I recently upgraded my 2015 Ram 1500 to a 2018 and they redesigned this flaw. It now has a screw post into the floor and a plastic wingnut to unscrew.

Same here! ‘18’s are assembled as they should be.

Yes but the bolt still goes thru the floor and is removed with the wingnut correct?....not a stud with just a wingnut that gets removed correct?

My understanding, is the problem is the threads on the stud/bolt get corroded to the nut preventing the it from coming thru to the inside when you loosen this wingnut.

Its just proof positive that just because someone goes to college for a degree or an advanced degree, you cant learn common sense. I deal with Pharmacists all day long in my profession and have been amazed with some of the dumbest **** they have asked me. I smile and stare blankly back at them and thinking they would be the first to get eaten in the wild....I would love to email the design engineer who spent 4,5 however many years in school and thought “ Lets just thread the floor, run a cheap bolt through it with exposed threads. Yeah, that would work just fine!”
NATURAL SELECTION-FAIL!!!

See if you can loosen the wing nut to remove the jack. In my case the tip of the Wingnut was severely rusted as it sticks through the floor under your truck.

No problem for me, but I only have 1,100 miles on my truck.

Bought my truck in November. First flat at 1000 miles. Second at 1400 miles. The retaining screw for my jack has not been through the floor long enough to corrode. I must say, the TPMS works great.

Good gawd... Very hard to turn all the way out: Even with a pair of channel locks it was a real struggle to get the bolt out. Only two months and a couple thousand miles on my 2017 Sport. Add a little arthritis and it was anything but “user friendly.”

Slathered the threads with anti-seize, and looking for a M6 bolt and wing nut to permanently install from the bottom.

Hate to have discovered this on a dark rainy night!

I am so thankful I don't have to deal with the rust that other States have to go through.

You're a good man for bringing this to everyone's attention. I looked at mine and it looks brand new. The day it came off the show room floor. It took no effort to get it to come off. In fact, I flicked it with my finger and it nearly spun itself off and off the thread.

BUT! I did throw some grease on it. Can't hurt!
