Don’t get me wrong I think the tow/haul worked well I just wanted to keep it from going into 5th gear. It shifted well and did what it was suppose to just didn’t like it searching between 4-5. Maybe it had something to do with it being a big sail back there. It’s 26ft from tongue to tail.

Well, after looking up the vin for my old truck, I guess I did have the 3.92’s in it as well. Lol. I was thinking it might’ve had the 3.55’s or maybe even the 3.73’s but now it’s got me wondering; do y’all trucks have the tow package? That one did. It came with the factory receiver hitch, 7-prong pigtail plug, and the fold out tow mirrors. Maybe that’s why it did so well. Lol.

Yeah I definitely have the factory tow package. I think my truck tows well and never has temp problems so I think it’s just that final gear while towing that sail behind me. I’m sure it has a lot to do with it.

You didn't say what tranny you have, but I would guess a 4 speed as my 2004 had. It struggled up steep hills because of not enough gears to utilize. If you make the change you will pay a significant penalty in fuel consumption with and without the trailer. I switched from my 2004 5.7, 4 speed to a 2016 crew cab 5.7, 8 speed. I pull a 7000 lb 28' TT. I ordered my truck with 3.10 rear end and utilize my 8 gears as I need to. Typically travel in 7th max with the trailer on flat roads. Then limit the tranny to 6th max in hilly country. Works great for me. I get 21 to 22 mph highway without the trailer (80 % of my driving), and 11 to 12 mph with the TT.

3.21 with 8 speed trans is the probably stock but can be optioned to be 3.55 or 3.92 from the factory. Just depends on the package it gets ordered with.

A 2015 5.7 with the 8 spd trans came from the factory with 3.21 or 3.92
The 5.7 with the 6 spd trans could have 3.21, 3.55 or 3.92 The 6 spd trans will have the column shifter.
You'll want to find a truck with the 8 spd, it's a much better trans than the 6spd

For reference the 3.6l V6 came with 3.21 or 3.55 The 3.0l EcoDiesel came with 3.55 or 3.92 Either V6 engines only have a 8 spd transmission

Whats the best gear ratio for pulling a 5,000lb "dry" travel trailer? Would I have an issue with my 3.21 ratio?

As far as I understood is that if your truck is the 5th Gen {2019} it should be alright since you got the 10 speed if I'm not mistaken ....my truck is 2009 with 3.55 gear (5 gears) and my trailer is about the same weight as yours and it seem to tow decent.

The best would be to have the lower ratio, especially with the 3.6l V6. If your towing mostly flat roads and shorter distances, the 3.21 with the Hemi will be fine.

Even the Gen5 trucks have an 8 speed. It's the 8HP75, a beefed up version used in the Gen4 trucks.

Lower is always better IMHO. Nobody should be towing fast.

I got passed yesterday on US 40W by a guy in a Ford pickup towing about a 26-28 ft TT on a drop hitch. I was doing almost 70 mph. He was going 15 +/- faster than me. Just stupid.

I totally agree with you...even though I'm a Newby but common sense tells me to go at a reasonable speed. Thank you for your feedback

Go 4.10. if you're going to put in the work for either and 4.56 is too much for you then 4.10 is the winner. You're not talking about much between the two so if fuel mileage is a concern, they will be similar and you'll get better pulling perforce from the 4.10s.

Yeah I was kind of leaning toward that or get a 2500 truck only because of the load(weight) issue

I have 4.10s and wish I would have gone with 4.56 to be honest. Of course, I don't tow at all so it would have been purely for enjoyment. I run 275/60/20 and I am still under 2K RPMs on the highway. Definitely go at least 4.10 if you're going to make the swap.

Then you'll need the 4.10 gearing even more, a 2500 weighs almost a ton more than a 1500. I the factory HD gearing is 3.73 with 4.10 being an option.
I'd try re-gearing to 4.10 and if you didn't like it go with a new 1500 hemi/3.92 (8 spd) unless you think you want to go a lot bigger in the trailer dept then entertain a HD truck.
