Hey guys. I’m due for tires and was wondering if 10 ply is too much for my 1500, what about 4 ply? I have 20” wheels. I do some off-road driving with the occasional towing. I’m look for an all terrain tire. What do you all suggest?

Load E tires are factory spec in my 1500 Outdoorsman. There nice for towing but not really needed, major reason for running Load E tires is they're heavier construction deals with hazards better when traversing off the pavement

Essentially, they're overkill for any 1/2 ton truck. A c load rating would be far better, but the majority of tires made in the sizes that are used on these trucks are either p or d/e rated. I'm running e rated 275/65/20s and they aren't bad. Would have preferred to have a C or D rated tire to save on weight though.

Had E 10 ply on all previous half tons for 20 plus years. When towing they are way steadier, and you can air them down, for better ride, think I had one flat in that time.
I worked on construction sites.

I ran 275/65/20 Falken Wildpeak AT3W on my 2016 1500 and they were a nice upgrade, especially for towing. With that said, the E-rated tire was entirely overkill and did contribute to a harsher ride...but they were the size I wanted

A lot of the hunters around here have gone to the pirelli scorpions A/T plus. Everyone that has them says they love them. Great in snow, mud, sand and are super on the road…quiet and pretty smooth….not like a heavy E rated tire. I just ordered a set from Sam’s in 275/60r20 for $885 on sale. They’ll be here Wednesday and I do a follow up post.

General (Continental Tire owns them) Grabber ATX. Runner up = Falken Wildpeak AT3. Both excellent in all conditions, will wear faster than all season of course. Mileage will be reduces from all season as well, app. 1.5 mpg.
We run only Generals on all 3 trucks at our house.

General made in USA, Falken made in Thailand, unless Sumitomo finally started up their New York plant. Haven't kept track. Shop around for best price installed. I use local mobile installer, Discount Tire was also good.

How you like them @turkeybird56 ? Give OP some feedback maybe.
They be fine for my needs. Like towing a trailer through a hay field, and such. But I run a stock truck, stock height. They did real well in Feb 2021 snow storm of 8" plus ice. I found I did not need "E" rated as I tow infrequently except to take Hoss somewhere and go and buy hay, get stuff from Home Depot, things like that, which be why I have my trailer for hossies and home stuff.

Trailer 14' X 6', stock, WW, 2150 lbs dry, dual axle, electric brakes.

I ran 10 ply BFG KO2s on my trucks for years. Found them to be very slippery on wet pavement before they were even half worn. Switched to Cooper AS3 4S and found them to be a nicer ride, with perfect all weather performance. They are an overload truck tire as well. Just picked up a new Durango and switched to the Coopers for that. Really happy with them. The BFGs never gave me any problems other that being slippery and with a lot roughter ride.

On my 17 RAM 1500 I have has 4 ply, 8, and 10 ply tires. The 8 ply are Hankook Dynapro AT2 tires. They ride the best of all, and are waring so much better. I have 23,000 miles on them now and they are not quite 1/2 gone. Other tires lasted between 18,000 to 2200 miles.

Happy with these, came out to little more than half the cost of the big name brands. Stock 20" wheels on 2018 RAM 1500 Crew Cab Bighorn, retired so low miles. Quiet when on I-95, including towing a small travel trailer. Good in snow and local fire roads too. No big MPG hit either.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate all the help. This may be a dumb question but can I clear a Lt295/65R20?

I’ve run these for the last 6 years although I only had 20,000 on the first set , I realized from the beginning they needed to be inflated near 50psi and balanced when rotated because of their substantial weight.

They’re snow rated and offer extra sidewall protection with softening of road imperfections. Because the snow rated durometer of the rubber I feel they wore prematurely by 10,000 but I chalk that up to my learning curve with the power to weight ratio of my truck and the rear differential spinning the life off of them.

When the tread is still on them they handle phenomenal in wet conditions and had zero hydroplaning and plowing through saturated road conditions at speed.

I used my BFG’s with a majority of my driving on interstates at high speeds an grades where as those aspects of my use are also probably responsible for their shortened live expectations. My new set are hopefully going to last closer to their advertising rating because of hindsight of the first set and less interstate travel.
