How do I know if my Ram 2500 is a 4th or 5th generation truck. We haven't had a Dodge product since 1973 when my XYL bought her first car. It was a Plymouth Fury III with a 360 V8 4 barrel carb. Stopped at a gas station once, to fill it up. After about fifteen minutes the attendant came out and told me I would never be able to fill the tank unless I turned off the engine first. Looks like the 2500 is going to be the same on fuel.

Does it have the chrome 2500 badges mounted on each side of the hood? If it does its a 5th gen if not its a 4th gen.

Your truck is 2019, so it is a 4th gen in the 2500 model......1500 models are different.

There is no actual change to a 5th Gen for the HD.

If you have a 2019 HD it is almost a 5th Gen and is refered to as a 4.5 Gen by most.

1st Gen 81 to 93
2nd Gen 94 to 2002
3rd Gen 2003 to 2009
4th Gen 2010 to 2018
4.5 Gen 2019+

The easiest way on a new truck has been mentioned. If the 2500 badge is on the hood...it is a 4.5 Gen if it is on the door it is a 4th Gen.

The most obvious change is the loss of the crosshair grille...but there are some 4thGen trucks that do not have it either.

Hope this helps. More info on the OP end would help.

The generation issue gets very blurred. Going from Gen 2 to Gen 3 was easy (kind of) in body style at least. 1500s started Gen 3 in 2002 model year, HDs (2500s and up) started Gen 3 in 2003 (but had some drivetrain items from 2002, as I found out hard way). Gen 3 to 4 I think were 1500s were new Gen 4 from 2009 and HDs from 2010.

Gen 5 is harder. 1500s split in 2019 with new style (1500 badge on hood instead of door) starting then and also the 4th Gen rebadged as 'Classic" which continues into 2020. The HDs in 2019 had new badge in hood design due to the front end addition to them but essentially retained 4th Gen elsewhere. I think, but defer to someone else to confirm, that the 2020 is finally a new version beyond the hood and some fit/finishes.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.... as I said, we've been away from Chrysler products for a long time. The truck is a 2019, with the badges on the Hood. One of the things that makes it better looking than the older models, and the current Ford's or Chevy's is the changes made to this model year. Ram definitely has a better looking truck.

So you must have the 6.4 gas? Yea they use a lil more fuel than the 5.7 but their not as bad as old school stuff. I'm getting 14 with 4:10 gears in a mega cab.
I would've loved to had 10 in the sbc 400 with 4:11 gears I had when young. I lived with 4-5 on hwy then and basically 0 if tromped the loud pedal.

Thanks for all the replies and information. We just got back from taking the Camper to Kelley's Island for a week. The Ram pulled like a dream, compared to the old F250 Diesel. I wish I would have had this truck from the start!
