My CV boots are torn on my 2011 ram 1500 5.7L 4x4. I have a friend who says there is a sir clip on the inner ring that is a bugger to get. Also he says to release the lower ball joint to get the cv shaft out as an easy trick. I seen a few vids. It seems most people undo the upper control arm and the tie rod to get the cv shaft out. I am fairly new to this truck. any advise helps.

Is there a sir clip on the dif????? and what is the easiest way to tackle this job.

Pop the upper ball joint not lower. Driver side is usually easier to do. There are c clips on the stub shafts in the diff. Just did one last week took me an hour to get it out using a three pound hammer and an air chisel. It was miserable but it's doable.

Some have slide hammers to pull the Cv off the splines other than that it's the same. Jack up, take tire off, take Cv axle nut off, take brake caliper and bracket off and hang it oit of the way, disconnect the abs sensor, take upper ball joint nut off and smack the knuckle till it pops off. Than remove replace and bolt it all up. Sometimes u have to use a bar between the spring pocket and control arm to get enough pressure on the tapered shaft to tighten the ball joint nut up again as it likes to rotate sometimes.

This is how I do them and everyone else in my shop does it the same way.

Undo the upper ball joint and tie rod from the knuckle. Use a hammer to knock the inner joint off the stub shaft on the diff, then pull it out far enough so the inner joint is completely off the stub shaft. Then undo the axle nut, use a hammer and punch to get it out of the wheel bearing.

The issue is when the cv axle is seized to the stub shaft. When that happens the stub shaft will start coming out with the cv axle.

If that happens, you’ll likely have to remove the knuckle. Then pull out the axle and stub shaft together, put it in a vice and beat the **** out of it and hope they come apart. If not you’ll need a new stub shaft as well.

My buddy still swears on taking the lower ball joint off. and he has done it before. I am being careful. I am new to the hemi world the past year and a half. I know my 2000 f150 inside and out. I love this ram. But a lot more complex then the old Ford.

You can do it whichever way you like. Personally I find it easier doing the upper ball joint, then you’re not having to lift up the knuckle to put it back on the ball joint.
