2011 ram 5.7 201k with about 14k on new cam and lifters and running redline 5w30 since i did cam and lifters. I now have a hard tap every once in a while at idle if you turn volume up and listen to vid you will hear a harder TAP. What do you guys think it could be? when it started doing this i did a engine flush and oil change didnt help at all. Also you hear it more when engine is warm and calms down.

Should have sent that for a uoa, did the oil smell like gas at all? How has mileage been? Oil pressure is good? Sounds like something got bent up in there. Doesn't sound like typical hemi tick to me. How long has this been going on? The risk is if something is bent and left alone, could cost you a block. Might have to pull the heads and take a looksy.

Just one guys opinion, after listening to it a couple more times, it is in the realm of possibility it is sticky lifters. It holds oil level well?

Oil level is good i changed oil 3 days ago when i did the flush it did not smell like gas its been doing this for about 2 months now. The oil pressure is good truck drives fine idles smooth but its getting lil louder now hell i drove it 6 hours the other day with no problem.. I just wanna catch this before something lets loose. It burns a lil oil but nothing crazy at all. As for mpg i get 12-14 around town with a intuine i3 87 octain tune and a heavy foot so thats about right i guess. Only other thing it has done since i got the truck is when engine is hot it pings a lil bit under load i changed the spark plugs with oem last month thought it would help made it run better but did nothing for pinging or this noise.

Sounds like a roller on lifter starting to seize.
If a lot of miles maybe timing chain tensioner.
Hope its not lifters already goin bad but could be.. Timing chain and Tensioner was replaced when i did the cam.

Sounds like a sticky lifter... mine does the same thing but it goes away when it’s fully warmed up, which is not what’s happening here. I think it’s a lifter from the sound of it but tough to tell just from audio

Hi, mine was doing the same thing after an oil change or randomly after the truck sat for a couple of days. Don't think it's a sticky lifter... but I didn't find the cause.
I' ve read that you have the Diablo I3 : try to increase the idle rpm at N to settle it between 700 and 800 (instead of between 600 and 700).
It worked for me: no more noise and a smoother idle.

It doesn’t sound good!

Did you do the engine work yourself or pay a shop to do it?

My company is all about oil samples on their equipment at every oil change and service. They’ll rebuild a motor, trans, pumps, etc...when everything sounds and runs fine! But the oil sample tells them differently.

I did the work myself would never trust any shop to do work on my vehicles ive seen to much Lol. Warranty for my cam/lifters of course ran out 3 months ago going to pop valve covers off and take a look if i dont see anything guess ima just run er til it blows...then find diff motor or do a full rebuild..

Welp Something weird happened today now i haven't really driven it much since i did the oil change maybe 10 miles but went to drive it today was sitting at the light it misfired stalled.. it has never done this b4 it fired right back up and drove fine no codes. It never happened again drove it all day noticed its running a little smoother then usual at idle.. AND UNO WHAT the noise is gone back to reg lifter noises no more hard TAP. Maybe something was just hung up and after running it more with the fresh redline oil it un stuck?? who knows lol.

Interesting... I’d monitor it. Drive it easy for a while, drive it like you stole it for a while. See if it comes back. Could’ve been a piece of something hanging up. If it doesn’t come back, congratulations! I’d do another oil change just to be safe. If a piece of metal was loose you dont want it floating in the pan for extended time

It could be one of the MDS lifters were not pumping up, you got Redline oil in it now, Put some Lube Gard Bio Tech in the oil, it will help if you have a sticky lifter.

Will look into it thanks. I wish when I did the cam ect I would of 100% removed and put reg lifters/cam maybe next time around.

I have the same noise on my 2011. Left front of engine. Goes away after a few minutes of running and when warm never hear it. I recently put shorty headers on it but I think the noise has been there before that

Yea this wasn't exhaust related i re surfaced my manifolds when i did the cam. It never went away engine was at operating temp hell thats when it was loudest.Drove it 4 hrs yesterday its still good since the oil change only makes the normal lifter noises at the moment.

A couple of thoughts:

You can bounce around until the cows come home and listen to all the advice on the web while the noise continues. Or you can attack the problem logically! The first thing would be to have an oil analysis done by Blackstone Labs (you can look them up) and ask for expedited testing. This will tell you the rough health of the engine based on the analysis and if there is/are components wearing abnormally they can pin point it by the type of contamination. Let the truck sit until you get the oil results back. Given the potential for catastrophic engine damage, that's what I'd do. While you're waiting, check exhaust gaskets for signs of leakage as well as something mechanical hitting the serp belt and/or rotating components. Check for the simple and dumb causes like loose valve train bolts or a socket laying on top of the rocker. Grab all your receipts and get ready to do battle with the parts suppliers for defective parts! Make sure you find the assembly lube receipt!

Ping is probably a bit of a knock from contaminated 87 Octane w/ethanol and a load of gas line antifreeze. Move up to 91 and recheck when you get the ticking sorted out.

Probably not the zip-bang repair advice you were hoping to get but all it will cost you is some time and $20 for the analysis.

Good luck,

****
