I have been reading and watching you tube videos of how to turn off the stupid MDS / eco mode. I have watched a video of someone just using the gear selector to select 6th gear which would be great HOWEVER in my 2011 ram 1500 it will not allow me to go past 5th gear on the manual gear selection. So this option doesn't work for me as I do not want to be running in 5th gear on the highway! Using the tow/haul option does the same thing, Is there no other option besides a tuner? I have seen video of guys using gear selection and putting in 6 gear. Must be only available on 2012 an newer models maybe?

The 2011 RAMs didn’t come with 6-speed automatics. Your truck has a 545RFE transmission. (5-speed.)

The 545RFE just has an extra overdrive ratio, and is essentially a 45RFE with an overdrive gear. The 45RFE being a 4-speed, used in the 3.7L of the same year.

Alright, so putting it in 5th gear on manual gear selection is the highest there is in my transmission then? So that is the best way to by pass the mds?

Yes. My 2010 is the same.
Around town I leave it in 4th since I never get fast enough for overdrive to kick in.
Highway runs I leave MDS on.

Yes, that is the best way without a tuner.

When you get tired of hitting the shifter ery time like i did get a diablo sport intune3 to shut it off its really easy to do it also wakes the hemi up a bit love the tune i got installed.

The 65RFE is basically the same trans as a 545RFE with an upgraded torque converter and different programming allowing you to select 2nd Prime manually. Other than that it’s virtually the same trans.

I agree a get a Diablo I3 and disable MDS. Also consider custom tuning that will give allow your tuner the ability to give you a true six speed shift pattern on your 545.

The 45RFE, 545RFE and 65RFE are physically identical transmissions. The only difference between the 45RFE and the 545RFE is the software in the TCM. In the 45RFE, 4th gear is an overdriven gear at 0.75:1 and 4th gear is obtained by applying the O/D Clutch and the 4C Clutch. In the 545RFE, 4th gear is still the same ratio at 0.75:1 but the programming in the TCM allows for the O/D Clutch and the 2C Clutch to be applied to give us a 5th gear with a 0.67:1 ratio. The 45RFE utilizes a single overdrive ratio while the 545RFE utilizes two overdrive gears. Both use a torque converter clutch as well.

When the 2012 model year was introduced the 545RFE programming was changed and the 65RFE came to life. It received a new torque converter and the ability to use all 6 forward gears while using the ERS, or Electronic Range Select mode.

So two people now have told me 5th gear is the overdrive thats all there is but why when I am on the highway and have it in 5th and then shift the gear selector back to automatic it drops the rpm down ??

I wouldn't do that. I activate/deactivate from a stop on my 2010 (also the 5 spd). Probably drops it into 4th or abruptly activates MDS and drops 4 cylinders at highway speeds.
