I'm lifted and noticed a HUGE difference going from 3.55 to 4.56.
What does going from 3.55 to other gears cost? Benefits? Negatives?
Can you be more specific? I'm not knowledgable on gears.
Depends on if you're 2wd or 4wd.
Of course 4wd will cost more. Usually double. BUT for 4wd 2012, a new front diff assembly is required as the stock gears are welded.
I have pics of the nasty stock carrier when my shop had it open. Pretty sad
But since the rear carrier needs to be machined too. It's close to an even split.
I'd say for a 2wd, run you $1000-$1200
4wd will run you $2200-$2400
These are avg prices. Some may charge $50-$200 less and some shops will charge $50-$200 more.
It's all in their experience and comfort level in doing it. And whether they can machine in house or not.
The more leverage the engine has the better the performance. With a lifted truck, add of course tire diameter, the wind resistance from the added height and then the huge weight of heavy rims and tires up. It's a big difference over the truck sitting stock. You want that transmission to not get hot just moving the truck...... you want better than snail acceleration.... you gear it.
Basically re gearing gets your truck back to stock ratio or better than stock ratio.
Hope this makes sense.
My truck is 2WD and I'll never lift it.
If you're running stock tires or slightly larger than stock and won't ever race, then you're fine.
Gears also help those looking for more 'get up' even if they are not lifted. Like the OP
Thanks for the info
