Hello all,

I have a 2013 Ram 1500 5.7 with roughly 240,000 miles. Recently it started idling rough, misfire code p0303, low oil pressure at idle, smoke from exhaust (no coolant level loss, no milky oil, no overheating) and just running like dirt. I've done a few troubleshooting things but feel it's beyond my "to do at home" scope.

That to say, I'm going to list it for sale locally. The truck is in great condition! However, with the issues I described, what in your opinion would be a good and fair asking price?

Thanks!

Take it to a CarMax and get an offer. That may be your best bet. Really hard to guess otherwise, look at local sales, do a price on KBB.com, suggest fair condition. Good luck

I did a quick KBB used truck value, using "Fair", as the condition I selected.

Considering that anyone who looks at buying it is going to assume the engine is bad, needing at least a cam/lifter replacement, it's age and mileage, you'll probably be looking @ or below the lower end of this range.

Remove the snorkel and rubber hose to the throttle valve. Check the actual throttle valve for carbon/fuel deposits. Very likely it's got deposits in the throttle bore and blade which need to be cleaned up. It's routine maintenance. Clean the bore completely with some Throttle Body Cleaner and a solvent-safe angle brush which you can get at any parts store for like $2 ...like THIS. Clean on the backside of the blade too. Let the truck sit 10 minutes and go wash your hands...so the cleaner can evaporate before starting. Make sure when you put the boot on, the rubber doesn't get folded under itself ...which is easy to do. In fact if you had it looked at recently, maybe the mechanic mistakenly did just that (fold the rubber hose under itself when he put it on).

A failing temperature sensor can also do as you are describing. The sensor is telling the computer a reading (temperature) that isn't true and it might make the engine run 'rich'.

Other possibilities:

- Cracked vacuum hose
- Leaking engine vacuum somewhere
- Bad spark plug/coil etc
- Problem with fuel injection
- Bad cam
- Bad fuel...or water in fuel (although it usually doesn't blow 'black')

I just traded my 2013 Sport 1500 with 114k miles and the transmission and engine was working just fine. I got $13k which is on the lower end for a trade for the truck but my driver's seat was torn up on the side and it had some scratches and a little rust. It had the 8 speed and the navigation radio upgrade from that year. Also had the best gear ratio for towing (3.92 I think).

If there is any paper out on it there is a limited buyer pool even smaller then already exists thanks to the issues. If there isn't any paper on it you can see how much paper you can get from a credit union and get it fixed, 6-7k should do a bang up job assuming the truck really is in good shape, maybe even boost it up to ten if possible and get a new engine. If you ignore the fact that you own it, how much value to you would a 2013 ram with a brand new engine have to you? A new engine in a ram like that is going to be very desirable even if you end up selling in a few years.

But to your question, I'd ask for 4500 on craigslist and take 4. There is a lot of value in pick up trucks right now as new trucks look like house payments and many guys don't mind taking on projects. Try selling some other 2013 vehicle with a cam.lifters out, you will be parting it out. Your luck is its a pick up truck, there is value left even with fatal issue.

You didn't mention model, as in Laramie or tradesman or whatever it is.

List it on Marketplace as a "Mechanic's Special" as you described, for $4,950 ...and see what happens. You can always come down but you can't go up. That should weed out the Mom's & Millennials who are expecting a like-new truck for $4,500-ish. If you come down ...plenty, the buyer will be tickled and you won't hear from them again. Make sure you get a written receipt signed by you and the buyer stating they are buying it As-Is ...No Warranty.

Note: low oil pressure at idle isn't as big of a concern as long as it goes up to an acceptable level driving. Who knows on the smoke?? Gotta look at it. Could be something simple ...or not.
