Bought this truck not long time ago. Have a sweet smell inside the cab when heat is on. I suspect heater core. Will try to take care of the problem before freezing temperatures. Never done this before and I heard it's a slow process but not so hard. Anyone done this and could give me some advice? I will check youtube for some videos but maybe someone here will point me to the right one that you used to work on your heater core? Can I download a step by step write up somewhere?

I have some heat but not much. I think it might not be enough to defrost my windshield in winter

Few months ago I watched a video of an asian guy working at a dealership who recorded the whole process step by step. It was a great video. But I didn't saved it thinking I will be able to find it again when I need it and of course I can't. Went thru A LOT of videos on youtube and can't find the one.

It's pretty involved. Most of the videos I saw were not made very well and will make you dizzy. The entire dash has to come out, typically. I sold our 4Runner when the evap core went out.

There's a couple good videos for the ram 1500 on YouTube. Went through all the steps to drop the dash and where all the bolts are at. Says evaporator, but need to do the same to get to the heater core. I did both when I did mine.

Be sure to disconnect your battery 30 min before you start. Don't want to throw codes for disconnecting things while power is to them and don't want to inadvertently trigger an airbag..

Also may want to consider taking it to an AC shop to have the freon reclaimed before you start. My AC was already empty, but if it's not empty...

Its not to bad of a job replace the evaporator while your in there for sure un bolt the steering column let it drop down you dont have to take it out just remember to remove the brake switch first or you will break it. Un plug all connectors on the left and right kick panel areas and then un bolt the dash and swivel it out of the way and you have full access to the hvac box thats a rough description lol I will see if i can find a good youtube vid. I have done this job so many times i lost count i charge $1k where as a dealer would be 10x takes me about 8 hours to do.

Ground zero casting sand issue, it is possible rmi25 could have prevented this, still want to run it take sand and deposit or trap it in to overflow tank for removal.

Seams like we get the most reports 2014-18, but....

Customer complaints indicate that many Ram trucks, particularly those with the 5.7L and 6.4L Hemi engines, have experienced casting sand problems for more than a decade. Reported model years range from as early as 2012 up to at least 2022, suggesting the issue is not limited to a specific generation of the engine or vehicle

I want to replace both.
I see some videos they make sure to lock the steering wheel in place. Some guy says there is a clutch inside that will get damaged easily if the wheel rotates. Had this ever happened to you? Also do I need to remove the seats or I should be fine with them in place?

For sure if you spin the steering wheel
You will break the wiring in your clockspring ,
Securing steering wheel so it cannot turn will prevent that.

I had both front wheels chocked and the park brake on, didn't attempt to turn the wheel.

Slid both seats back. Paused the video at each step as I did them.

Not sure if the ram technical service manual in has the steps or not. Never looked. Really wasn't all that difficult. Took my time and spent about 6 hours on it total. Could have done it in 4, but cleaned everything behind the dash while I was at it, and let it dry. A lot of dust and smoke smell had built up on it.

I worked in a GM dealer years ago. One of my fellow techs set off the passenger airbag while he was under the passenger dash. The bag narrowly missed his head as it went over him. He couldn't hear for a couple of days.

Search youtube for MotorCity Mechanic heater core. he has a four-part video that's pretty detailed. It's what I found when I had to do my 2010

You're not disconnecting the steering shaft, all you're doing is laying the column down,be virtually impossible to turn the steering wheel once the columns unbolted, you can tie the wheel if you want, but it'll just be another thing you have to work around.

4-6 hours is not bad I thought it's more like a 2 day job
