Hey I have a 2017 2500 6.7l. About 4 weeks ago, ive noticed the transmission temp getting to about 168 - 174 degrees while towing a 10K lb trailer. We travel full time. Also, noticed it shifting differently. Anyone experience this with the 68RFE? If so, what was the resolution? We have a 1,000 mile trip coming up next week and Im worried the transmission might fail on the road. Thanks!

168-174 is perfect, no issue there. Can't comment on shifting "different" that is too subjective. If the truck is stock I wouldn't worry about it. If it is modified and you are running a high HP tune then it may be a concern.

I pull 16,000 pounds with a 3500 68RFE and my temperatures are in line with yours. Like mtnrider said, need more info on what your shifting observations are. I see consistent shifting and downshifting that maximizes exhaust braking.

When was the last time the trans was serviced?

Hey all, thanks for the comments. The truck is stock. Only added airbags and new shocks. It’s sluggish getting up to speed, takes long to shift than usual, and a slight jump/jerk shifting gears. I’ve only put 25k on it in the 1.2 years I’ve had it. It currently has 51k miles. I haven’t had the transmission serviced. Every place I’ve called said it could take two months m for any repairs. We travel full time so two months in one place is like an eternity.

Get the trans serviced asap, it can be done quickly, then worry about if repairs are needed... Make sure they use synthetic ATF +4 fluid if you have the 68 rfe trans, IR the Aisin trans takes a different fluid ..

Slow down on ripping into the transmission.

You can disconnect the batteries and trigger the system to relearn.

Are you using the tow haul button?

How’s the fluid level?

Is the fluid burnt?

Do you use the exhaust brake?

Do you notice it if shifted manually?

Is the sluggish due to transmission slipping or lack of engine power? Fuel filters been changed? Air filter? What’s your turbo boost psi according to the gauges?

Check you variable vein actuator if you haven’t used your exhaust brake or if it doesn’t work.

You always drive in tow haul? Redline c+ ester based fluid, takes heat better then oem atf4. Line one is oem, line 2 and 5 combo is what redline uses. Also really takes out harsh shifts when you change to redline c+, but sometimes just fresh fluid will do the same.Having said that, your trans is fine as far as temp goes. 175 is ideal temp.

Taking time between shifts is usually valve body leakage. Get a metal rfe oil filter thread and oem sump filter and look at ram forum synthetic filter for rfe options thread. Maybe toss a new valve body at it. Literally all the killer rebuilt valve bodies are for the cummins, you should have no issue finding an upgraded one. Usually over drive goes out first and is easy fix, if you lose early gears the transmission is in trouble.
