35x12.5 r17 spare tire

I’ve never seen a doughnut spare on a full size truck. They are made for hauling and towing so they all have full size spares.

I’m not sure about the HD’s but, there were/are 1500’s that came with a temporary spare. As far as whether or not it is smaller, I don’t know because all three of the full size pickups I’ve ever had, have all had full-size spares that were the same as every other tire on the truck but apparently some halftons came with a temporary use spare that could be significantly lighter than even what comes on the truck new.

But then again, I didn’t know we were talking about a PW, either.

Well, I guess I would suppose if you previously had a 33” full size spare hanging from there once before that you’d probably be fine with that big 35” but spare tire carriers aren’t created equally- at least not in looks or part number wise, anyways. Spare Carrier - Mopar (68230304AB) for Ram 1500...

...and-

Spare Carrier - Mopar (68303633AA) for Ram 2500.

Maybe you have nothing to worry about but I’ve just always wondered about what it would be like to drop a spare going down the road at highway speed if that cable were to ever break.

Interesting. I didn’t know the 1500 and 2500 had different tire carriers. Thanks for educating me. The 33 came factory on my PW so I guess I’m better equipped for hanging the 35? Idk? I’d also imagine if there was a failure it would be while bumping around off-road rather than going smoothly down the interstate. I truly hope I’m right and would hate to unnecessarily put others at risk. As you’re the first guy I’ve seen raise this as a concern I at least know it’s not an epidemic.

Yeah, I don’t know why they would have two different carrier winches but who knows, maybe yours is somehow cheaper to them than mine is, even though yours is cheaper to buy if a consumer were to buy it....lol.

Didn’t mean to make ya too overly concerned, I just know that some of those spare tire carriers aren’t as strong as you would think. Some of those wire ropes they use are like the same size as a dog run cable for a poodle....lol. I would guess as long as you didn’t over crank the handle and made sure your cable wasn’t frayed that you should be fine. And since yours was hopefully designed to carry a big 33” off-road tire, that 35” shouldn’t be pushing the limits too much but definitely on a halfton, I’d think twice about carrying that much weight.

I took mine off and tire is in the bed. What a pain in ass to get it up there. I’d think that carrier should be fine as long as it’s tight. If it was loose and banging around then I could see it breaking. You could always run a cable around it for “extra” insurance

Don't have a spare for my '12 RAM 2500 yet but on my '98 RAM 2500 I just aired the spare down, winched it up into place, did a bit of prybar (aka long screwdriver) to get it to seat all the way up into the pocket... Then aired it up to around 25 PSI. That sucker was IN there... The last time I had to use the spare, I had to drop the air in the tire a bit and use the handle of my HiLift jack and pry it down. Swapped the tires, aired up the spare, and down the road I went...

Yes, I had on-board air so wasn't worried much about the pressure.

Don't know about my '12 yet, but a 35 did fit up under my '98!

Hell if I know. It’s been since Aug and 7k. I don’t beat on my truck but it’s been off-road a good bit since and the spare seems to be holding strong.

I think my stock spare is 20" / 33s. Nonetheless, I'm going with 17" / 35s which I would assume weighs lighter than the stock spare so I'm not concern about the cable.
