Keeps oil from being recirculated back through your intake manifold and throttle body , leaving it much cleaner and helps cut down on carbon build up. Your vehicle will thank you. Especially if its an older 5.2 or 5.9.

Anyone have any pics of their catch cans? Are they much of a deal to install. Will it do quite a bit even if I'm running sythetic?

I could not understand why at 5000 mile I was down 1 quart on the dip stick. Installed a catch can after a 1000 mile it was half full. I think having a catch can is a must.

I'm at 5k since my lost oil change, and still full. Not 1 quart low. May be it's just the Hemi?

I used to have one on my car, but it was turbo. I ebbed up taking it of anyway. It did catch oil, but was just another line to lose boost. Oil is a lubricant, shouldn't be a problem unless it gums up the electronics. A cleaning every once in a while should take care of any negative effects. If it were that bad, I don't know how some motors go 200k miles without one.

Its not an upgrade that is going to show 10-15hp on the dyno, but your truck is going to run stronger with it. What many guys forget about is that the oil being mixed with your fuel will lower the overall octane level of your gas. Its not as significant on a stock truck, but with a tuner installed, you need all the fuel you can get to use the increased timing that is written into your tune. Some custom tuners wont even write a custom tune for your truck unless you have a catch can installed. Lower octane fuel + increased itming = spark knock which also = a loss of power.

Can someone explain, without bias, why Dodge doesn't install them from the factory if the benefits are so clear to so many of you?
I'm not new to mods, but have never had a catch can and just can't ge my head around why it's A) so beneficial to not recirculate the oil as the factory intended and B) catch and remove it from the system.

the catch can doesnt remove the oil from the engine/system, the engine itself has already removed it. All the catch can does is keeps it from going into the intake. Whether the can is there or not, the oil WILL be heading that direction. As they said, it lowers octane and gums up the throttle body etc. That alone can cause issues down the road. Dodge/Ram doesnt put one on because of costs probably. That, and the fact that after warranty is up, you may pay them to clean your TB when u have idling issues or knock issues. This is just speculation on my part

Dodge writes their tunes while taking into consideration that the octane level will be lower with that oil being recirculated back into the motor. Why doesnt Dodge put a better flowing intake, better flowing exhaust, at minimal short tube headers instead of the terrible log manifolds, why the crushed y-pipe instead of a better flowing y-pipe, why the extremely conseravtive tuning knowing that the motors are capable of much much more, why use an inefficient tq converter that is a big part of the 25% drivetrain loss that these trucks have??? There a thousand things that the manufacturers can do to improve these trucks. We mod our trucks to make them the way we want. Adding a catch can to better protect our motors and have a better performing motor is just 1 of those things...just like adding a cold air intake, better flowing exhaust, and a more aggressive tuner.

Thank you.
Last question: do we know with pretty good certainty that the intake (seals?) don't need this stuff as lubrication over the long term?

Mopar was going to market these as an aftermarket add-on (made by billet tech). Samples were produced and they were even assigned mopar part numbers. Some how the products never came to life and the part numbers dropped out of the system. Most people figured it was due to emission regulations and altering the certified equipment. The only down side to cans are the fact you have empty them or issues arise. Which is probably another reason oem's arent equiping engines with them.

There are guys that have been running these for 50-60k miles without any trouble. The factory system is designed only for emissions standards and wont have any ill effects if you install the catch can.

I wonder if anyone has drilled and tapped a hole in the bottom and put a little valve to drain it?
