hey guys, wondering if someone could give me some advice. a couple of weeks ago, my 2000 2500 5.9 six speed ran out of fuel. the sending unit was messed up and was reading a 1/4 tank. anyway, I got it home and decided the in tank pump went bad. I replaced it (what a pita) and the filter and tried to purge the line. I bumped it a couple of times and got no fuel when I tried to bleed the lines both in the fuel filter and the high pressure pump. I switched around the relays so I don't think its electrical. any thoughts or suggestions. could the line be clogged. the sending unit is working now as the fuel level is just a little above empty and the "gas pump" indicating low fuel is displayed now. any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Pull the line from the fuel filter canister... try to start the truck, if you get fuel, its not clogged, if you don't , then there is your problem. If you ran it completely out of fuel, you may have gotten some sediment into the injection pump... or even the injectors. You can try to run a high concentrate of Diesel Kleen or the like and maybe clean out the crap in the system. Whatever you do, DO NOT use starting fluid. Good luck, keep us posted!

Thanks for the tip. I was wondering where to pull the line I was going to blow the line before hooking up the tank, but I forgot. if its clogged, is there any problem with blowing the junk backwards into the tank? or, should I drop it again and push it forward keeping the line to the filter disconnected?

You could try that... but I would recommend flushing the tank afterwards to prevent the same issue.

ok, got another question....after I disconnected the line to the filter, it still doesn't flow but a short line comes from a small unit from under the fuel filter. what is the small unit under the fuel filter? it reminds me of a carburetor bowl is it a lift pump?....filter?....it looks pretty messed up....dirty, rusty and probably hasn't been changed in awhile.

I think fuel pump similar to the Delphi lift pump. has a fuel fitting and tube that came up to the fuel filter. three mounting bolts I found a part number 05080885AA that seems to be it and a link to parts MODULE PACKAGE, PUMP. Fuel, Fuel Pump/Level Unit. DODGE # 68003854AB that lists it. that seems a little expensive and was wondering what aftermarket pump would work. I thought there was only one pump...in the tank. this is really similar http://www.autozone.com/autozone/pa...N-je5y9Z8vcz2?itemIdentifier=340425_971897_0_

here is a shot, the best I could get. removed the filter to be able to remove the clamps. like I said, in pretty rough shape. I think I should just get a new one once I can be sure of what to get.

Being I haven't been under the hood of a 24V more than a handful of times, I am not 100% sure what that is... You said it is directly underneath the filter bowl? The lines from there would go to the injection pump correct? That looks like the lift pump itself, which feeds the injection pump, but I may be wrong

I think youre pretty much on to it. it is directly below the filter and feeds into the filter via the one hose out of the top. I think as long as I have it apart, i'll go ahead and order one.....amazon has them relatively cheap. I know the tank pump/sender was bad because when I put the fuel back in, it registered....so hopefully if I can get it working by replacing that pump, ill be ok.....hoping the injector pump is ok...that would be $$. thanks for the input.

I agree, might as well while you are in there, it can't hurt!

Hopefully the pump itself isn't bad... they aren't cheap at all.

Good luck, let us know if we can help further
