Does anyone know the specs of the stock Alpine 8" sub box? I want to upgrade the sub but I don't know the mounting depth. Curious to see if I can squeeze a JL Audio 8w3 in there

i believe it is 4.5". are you planning to use the factory amp or will you be adding in a new amp? the factory sub is a dual voice coil 2ohm unit.

i have been looking at swapping out the factory sub and using the factory amp for now. the most popular choice seems to be the Pioneer shallow mount, i am going to try and use a kicker shallow mount sub, should be ordering next week.

Ya I planned on using the factory amp for now. The 8w3 is only rated for 250W RMS. I don't want pioneer and I don't care much for kicker. I've had them both and was never impressed. I had two 10w3 once and two 12w6 and both of them blew me away. JL Audio has me spoiled. Idk if I could ever buy a different sub

I replaced the stock sub with a JL 8W1v3-4. It has a 3.8" mounting depth. Paired with a AudioControl LC2i and Alpine PDR-M65 amp.

I did modify the stock box a bit. I epoxied the corners and seams for added strength and then lined the box with dynamat. It sounds great.

The problem you will have is the weak power from the Alpine factory amp. No matter how good of a sub you install, lacking in power will make it a disappointment, IMHO.

^^ that's why the cheap Pioneer is a decent replacement for the stock sub using the stock amp. It's not a high powered sub. It'll produce cleaner, more accurate sound, but not thump very hard at all.

^^ well several 'could' fit that replacement, but Id hate to see the OP invest, and yet still be dissatisfied with output.
Want more bass, more than likely going to need more power.

True. I went the Pioneer 8" route in my Wrangler. At first is solved the muddy ****astic bass problem, but lost a little thump. I picked up a cheap LOC and a used amp off craigslist which resolved the power issue. I think my total out of pocket expense was $125 for everything. It's rockin pretty good now.
