This is to help people who try to get out of the truck in gear.
It saves lives.
Yes... It's because of this, and to avoid it happening again.
I find with the knob I sometimes turn it in the opposite direction from reverse and find myself in drive when I expected to be in park. It isn't a common occurrence and usual happens when I'm distracted. The one time I remember doing it and instantly hopping out of the truck made me thankful for the auto-park feature.
I never had this happen with a stick shifter, so I think for those of us with the shift knob it is a required safety feature.
