Been looking at it a few days. Got a oil change in about a week or so. Seen where it claims you can go 14-18,000 miles between oil changes. Seems like schaffers also looks pretty pricey. Is it worth the extra coin?

Just a newbie looking to learn.

Shaeffers is the original moly bible folks, so ram forum has a lot of respect for the brand and their educating people on the benefits of moly. I find it weird they promote a long interval, I thought they were on the low end on starting tbn, which is the number one gauge of if an oil will combat acid, which is the mark all labs use to determine an interval. Some super genius will say yeah burla it isnt a linear relationship, which I didnt say it was, just that all we know is high tbn = long interval. It is a risk to betray that common sense, but long term uoa's do look ok with shaeffers.

I'd say Shaeffers has to be a top 5 choice for a hemi, if you don't consider interval. Here is their pdf, you see their tbn is 7.0-7.5, which in nearly every other oil would be a conventional oil, most synthetics are in the 9's. So the point is, shaeffers is a great oil on a shorter interval. If you want learn other top choices, read the oil poll threads. Top 4 oils in order are Pennzoil-M1-Amsoil-Redline.

Burla. So if there were a top five where would the Schaffers rank in your honest opinion?

It’s a great oil, but not for extended oci. There are better choices such as redline. I use pup with a 5 to 6000 mile oci. Equally important is your choice of oil filer. As suggested, take a look at the synthetic oil thread.

I'd have to say redline number one, three way tie for number two, and m1 a good number 5, if we are talking about 20 and 30 weight oils. 0w40 would change the list dramatically. If I am considering the oils ram forum uses and not get too crazy in the weeds. Motul 300v could probably push one of them out, but we don't have enough info on that. Here is the last and most recent shaeffers posted bobs, straight killing it on the formula...

Redline is in a league of it's own, for a long interval being the only consideration Amsoil is in a league of it's own followed closely by PUP, Shaeffers also in a league of it's own in many areas. Depending on what was most important any of those three were top choice below redline, and I felt that way before you brought up Shaeffers. Specifically for known hemi issues, it is head and shoulders about non top 5 oils. Like your castrol, qsfs, valvolines, RP, and what I call tier two oils. Not tier two oils in general, but teir two oils in addressing hemi specific issues.

uoa from *****

300ppm moly and wear lowered over prior non shaeffers uoa.

See the finishing tbn after 7k miles? It is on the edge of going into danger zone. In the 2's.
