Just wondering.. Ive been eyeballing the Hertz HSK-163s. Kind of like my vocals up higher where they are at now on the dash. It'd be pretty simple to drop the woofer and mid in the factory locations, and then find a good spot for the tweeter on the sail panel behind the mirrors or a pillar.

I'm running a 3-way system but it's all custom door panels with on-axis tweets using JL ZR525s and ZR800s. I've got the tweeter in the sail panel with the mid and mid-bass in the door pods.

I wish I could run a 3-way in mine but it's got that overly complicated Alpine system in it.

I ran those very same Hertz speakers, with a Kenwood eXcelon amp, in my 2007 MegaCan. I also ran an Alpine MRP-M500 amp and 10" Type R sub with a gain control knob in the dash added later.

I really, really liked the Hertz speakers. I have some in my 300 as well.

Initially I ran the tweets up in the stock location at the base of the windshield but eventually moved them down and out to the upper door panels which worked awesome.

One day I'll figure out how to get some real speakers and amps into the 2014 and remove the Alpine system.

Nice set up man! And yeah they really are nice speakers. I used to be a CDT guy when I was more into car audio. I knew of Hertz but had never heard any of their stuff in person. Pretty impressive. I wanted to mention that I too have that alpine system. I see no reason you couldn't get those to work you just have to get a DSP. That particular system you showed is their 2 way components and plenty of guys are running those components in these trucks. :)

Post up pics man I'd love to see this. Pods are the way to go, I just really want to retain the factory/subtle look. That's just always been my style.

I ran the Hertz Hi-Energy 3 ways on my first build, they sounded awesome! Like you said, everything fits in the truck pretty easily. I tried the tweets on and off axis and off axis sounded much better, IMO.

My second build was also 3 way, but active and a little more elaborate... ;)

Awesome. I'll check out your build log. So you ran the 3" mids up in the dash too? How did you like them up there?

Yep, and I loved the way it sounded all the way around. I am looking at using Hertz again in a Wrangler build I'll be starting soon. Of course, the 3" mids holes don't line up with the factory holes, but use some double sided tape as a decoupler and get 2 screws in and your are good.

Edit: If you are planning on checking my build log, you should probably take some time off work and have some painkillers and alcohol handy, lol!

It's a couple... huh hmm... hundred pages: http://www.ramforum.com/f51/davidrams_1st_audio_build_ever-55414/

Yeah...I forgot to mention I swapped out the 165 door units for some 163 units later and it made quite a bit of difference.

That helped me decide on what to put in the 300.

Ordered a set of PPI p65c3's the other day. Not too many reviews on them unfortunately , so decided to take a chance and see how they do. In my 99 grand cherokee, I ran a set of CDTs and enjoyed them and then switched over to Rainbows and really liked them as well. Both were 2 ways but the jeep had a higher front door speaker than the ram and it brought the Soundstage up a bit. Hopefully these PPIs won't disappoint. Will let you know next tuesday. Planning on doing the woofers in the stock location, mids in the dash and tweets in the sails. Already have an audio control lc6i hooked up ready to go. Hifonics brutus is powering an alpine type s 10 under the rear seat right now.

Check out hybrids offerings for a 3way setup specially going active. I loved my L3s. Next 3way setup I want to try is the xbl mid from css. It's supposed to be really nice and it's not to spendy.

PPI p65c3's came in today with a new PPI 1600.4. Hopefully will get the amp installed and hooked up tomorrow and speaker wires and speakers installed by Monday. Will post pics and thoughts when completed.

I have some Exodus Anarchy mids and they are some sweet speakers man...not too great above 2khz, but mate them with a widebander (or two), or something like the Hybrid L3 than can play down low enough to easily mate with the Anarchy, and they're great. Great thing about using the L3 to cover a wide range, you get the majority of your vocals coming from one speaker on each side (which hopefully those locations are aimed towards you for great imaging).

John, just a heads up on 3-way if you are considering it.

I put the mids in the stock dash location and the tweeters in the sails. It took some tinkering with a DSP to get them to their fullest potential. I don't know that a standard crossover is going to give you the control that you will need to make them sound their best so go in with full knowledge that YMMV. The crossover on the other hand could be great?

I will add though, once properly setup, every future setup for me will be 3-way unless the vehicle configuration just does not allow it....or laziness kicks in. ;) My system sounds exceptional, everything plays in harmony while at the same time you can locate instruments throughout my cab.

3-way front stages can be great. But they can also sound like there's too much stuff going on. Controlling all speakers is key. Like mentioned above, the crossover plays a big part and I know nothing about the provided crossover in this set. IMO, going active with a 3-way set is almost a MUST....for me. That way you can control crossover points, make slope adjustments, level adjustments, time alignments, and finally tweak some eq bands where necessary. A DSP will give your system a dimension that no out of the box speaker set will.

Yeah I'll be running a bit ten. I have everything purchased now just need time to install. Ive never ran active and would try it but im running a 5 channel amp and going 3 way I'll have to bridge the channels making it a 2.1 setup. I haven't quite decided what I will do about the rear fill yet. I may just run it off the stock amp and obviously keep it lower. Not sure if it will be acceptable. Some don't like rear fill. I definitely like to have at least something there. Esp on a crew cab

I am using stock HU power for my rears in my crew cab and I think it works really well even though I am sending 700 watts to the front part of my cab. 700 loosely mind you, by time you tune and balance, the actual used wattage is much different.

I would recommend giving it a try this way, it adds a nice ambience without wrecking all of the hard work you put in up front. If you do not like it, you can always add to the rear later.
