I can access my the entire contents of my iPhone without taking it out of my pocket via bluetooth. Why would I need to take it out of my pocket and plug it in? I thought the purpose of bluetooth was to eliminate hard connections.

Am I missing something?

Fca doesn't have any wireless carplay or Android auto units yet. Uconnect5 is supposed to be, I think, but that's a whole new platform. Carplay/aa CAN be fully wireless (most aftermarket units are) but FCA has not implemented that

It's why I haven't bothered trying to convert my '17 to a uaq unit... If I still have to plug in, it's not worth it IMHO.

In theory, the hard wire allows more data quicker than bluetooth. Such as map displays for routing. What video projection do you do with bluetooth? But all voice commands can be done with bluetooth. I only sttache my phone via cable for longer trips in the truck, not usually around town.

Nav is the only thing I can see a use of it for. Factory navigation sucks especially on back WV roads. I have a mag vent mount for my phonw for when I use nav but it would be nice to actually have it on the screen.

Other than that, yes. Bluetooth works fine.

Can you send texts without wiring in?

I thought I read you couldnt (at least with Android Auto)

The Carplay interface is optimized for driving. Fewer buttons that are larger and a larger screen. I have found sending text message with Carplay a smoother experience and it seems to recognize my voice better. When connected to Bluetooth it brings up a clunky "Siri" or "Cancel" box and Siri seems to take a few seconds to engage. The on phone navigation apps are far superior to the factory ones.

I have a magnetic dock on a Bayou Goat Mounts http://www.bayougoatmounts.com/ triple mount. One handed connect and disconnect. This setup also charges the battery while I am driving so the battery seems to last forever. I use a magnetic mount for my trailer camera system so the extra room on the Bayou mount is great.

I’ve been kicking around the idea of getting this wireless Apple CarPlay adapter for mine that’ll make it to where you don’t have to plug your phone in to get the CarPlay to work, I just haven’t gotten around to getting it yet. Being that I just got an iPhone 11 Pro Max that came with an 18w charger, the USB port under the console lid just doesn’t seem to have as much juice to keep my phone charged. Come to think of it, it barely kept up with my iPhone 8 Plus as long as the battery wasn’t nearly dead. At least this way I could still get the benefits of CarPlay but use a much better charger that’ll actually charge my phone.

There’s all kinds of stuff. I really feel on mine and then when I use the Apple CarPlay I get a little bit better sound quality whenever I play music from my phone. You get a little bit nicer of a screen interface when you use CarPlay as well but one of the major things about using CarPlay is that if you’re like a lot of the rest of us who don’t care for the factory navigation, if you’ve got either Waze, Apple Maps or Google maps installed on your phone you can actually project that to your screen to take the place of the factory navigation.

Plus, if you use CarPlay, the voice to text feature for using Siri to send messages is far better than the voice recognition stuff on our Uconnect.

Yeah, big bummer you need something like that. jimmy07 and roman are working on adding the 12" to a 4th gen and even THEY need to plug in as well.

I would go aftermarket but would lose the in-EVIC nav directions (which I love).

I was wondering if the new fifth-GEN 12 inch screens were still making you plug your phone in to get the CarPlay to work.

Yeah, that is a nice feature. The very very few times that I’ve used my factory navigation, I did like how the directions would pop up on the dashboard screen like that but hey, as long as I use Apple Maps with CarPlay and I’m wearing my Apple Watch at the same time, those turn by turn directions even a little turn signal blinker sound will appear on my watch screen whenever I’ve got a turn coming up so it’s good that Apple thought about that…lol.

Im an Android guy, but I feel like CarPlay works much better and more seamless. More features as well, at least from anecdotal evidence (I dont have any vehicles with CarPlay or AA so its all just hearsay :) ) I was hoping they would go all-wireless in the new units but apparently not. And Im not sure the new units can be "upgraded" to UConnect5 when it releases.

For some reason, Im one of the few people that seem to like the factory nav. Ive used Google Maps on my phone for years, but all I need are directions and the factory nav works fine for that. If I were travelling coast to coast, maybe Google would be better, but I dont really go very far (and pretty much NOWHERE since Covid!)

Having had it in my last vehicle and now not having it in my truck, I can honest say I do not miss it. I found it to be convenient, but intrusive in a trade-off for convenience way.

Mapping software was about the only feature I used but not routinely enough to warrant the cost of purchasing a more expensive head unit.

Full disclosure, I have a cell phone for convenience and rarely use it for its intended purpose. I infrequently talk, sometimes text and have a handful of apps I find useful. I “upgraded” from a flip phone not so long ago.

I had a similar experience with AA. I actually switched to the iPhone for the better Carplay experience. Then I got off the Windows 10 tower PC for a Mac Mini. Peace and quite in my home office. I guess I drank the cool-aid and didn't even realize it.

To go wireless, it's a hardware upgrade inside the radio for the manufacturer, not a simple software upgrade, so you will not see the current units upgraded to uconnect 5.
The biggest advantage to using Google maps over oem nav is updates. You pay insane amounts to upgrade the oem nav each year.
Google maps is constantly updated, at no cost.

Most aftermarket HU are wired, there are a few with wireless android auto, and a few more with wireless car play.

Those adapters have inconsistent reviews. Most experiance trouble getting them to work, then they suddenly work great, then a week later they don't. Then they may go a day or a month working before failing again. Most people end up tossing them due to frustration.

Well if you're in a rural area with no cell service.google maps ain't gonna help.more of these places than you think.the voice commands on carplay or auto work pretty good say if you're in a different city and say directions to so and so it pops up on screen.so its pretty handy if you travel a lot alone and have no navigator riding shotgun.i might use it a couple times a month.
